Nice choices

Even as a fan of Cartier and recognizing that the Calibre and its variations are a great product, for me the decision would be quite easy.  My vote would be for the Piaget.  To me the Piaget is truly unique looking, and is a nice change in a world largely dominated by the "Bigger is better" idea.  I'm a bit tired of watches that keep getting larger and thicker.  So a watch that sets a record for being thin, and offered in an modern but still dressy 38 mm package is very appealing.  It also advances Piaget's normally quiet and traditional Altiplano line into the future with a bold design for both telling time and displaying the movement.  For me this is a watch that would also not be duplicative of any watches I currently own.

As for the Cartier...I like it more than the standard Calibre, but as a diver's watch I find it too busy.  I don't like the open date window showing 3 dates (in the fashion of an IWC).  In addition, I don't care for the mix of Roman numerals, stick markers and Arabic numerals.  IMHO, Roman numerals only belong on dress watches, not sports watch (yes, other makers have done it, like Rolex with their WG Daytona with meteorite dials...but I don't care for it). Also the small seconds at 6 adds to the dial looking too busy and almost cluttered.  I do give credit to Cartier for coming up with an interesting diver design.  Still, I find the most iconic diver and the only one that I need to own is a Rolex Submariner.   There are lots of similar designs from other companies, and even some innovative ideas, but often I find the designs are merely different, rather than a true improvement.

So for the above reasons, I'd go with the Altiplano 38mm 900P.  Good luck with whatever you decide.
Best regards,
Dino

Comparison review Piaget Altiplano 38mm 900P vs Calibre de Cartier Diver - which watch to pick

With a bit of thinking time available whilst travelling, I am virtually "choosing" between two watches from SIHH 2014. Piaget Altiplano 38mm 900P and Calibre de Cartier Diver represent opposite ends of the spectrum for watches. The former is the thinnest ...

I would choose the Cartier for myself (though I'm not sure it would actually be my first choice when it comes to a dive watch, as I have a particular fondness for the new Omega Planet Ocean models). When it comes to Piaget Altiplano I want it with a tradi...

Choice of Piaget Altiplano 900P and Calibre de Cartier Diver

Bill, Thanks for your vote and more importantly for the reasons to choose between the two watches. Most of the votes FOR the Piaget Altiplano 38mm 900P watch were actually on the Cartier forum ! It was an "unfair" exercise, with hindsight, as people were ...

Eloquent vote for Piaget Altiplano 38mm 900P

Dino944, Your impassioned plea for the Piaget Altiplano 38mm 900P launched at SIHH 2014 is very compelling. The points made are a concise rebuttal for the initial "kerb" appeal when you drive past the Cartier Diver. My swing-o-meter is a swinging back to ...

I of bulky huge watches ruined the beauty that occured in 1960`s and 1970`s. My choice would be definitely ,not to forget that Cartier previously used Piaget movements.
