The Art of Watches Grand Exhibition Discovering the World of Patek Philippe July 13th - 23rd, Cipriani 42nd St NEW YORK

Jul 27, 2017,05:42 AM

I had an honour to be invited together with my wife to this Grand Exhibition by Patek Philippe London Salon. Once again, it became absolutely clear that it is a great pleasure and honour to be a client of London Salon. Thanks to Mr. Ed Butland, Director of the Salon, and Ed's Angels, everything was absolutely First Class corresponding the image of Patek Philippe. Thank you Ed, Isobel and Holly!

I would not call this exhibition just an Exhibition but "A Bottomless Source of Inspiration and Dreams".

So much has been already written about this Exhibition that I'm taking a bit different angle. I have to apologise but I do not have any pictures taken by me. But I have a perfect excuse: I'm an idiot! I took with me my Leica Q, charged the battery but when I started to take photos, I noticed that I forgot the memory card. On the second visit I had a memory card in my pocket, but forgot the camera to the hotel. On the third visit I decided to use my iPhone, but the battery was flat...

I would like first to compare the London and New York Exhibitions.

The overall quality of the exhibitions were the same. However, Saatchi Gallery was remarkably larger than Cipriani. It was easier to move around in London than in NYC and the queue to Cipriani was something like 100 meters long. That did not disturb us because London Salon organised us fast entrance and a top class private guide. Thanks again Ed (if you happen to read this).

In London the Special Edition Watches were quite limited.

In addition to these Specials, some rare Special Versions of watches, made in very limited quantities, were hidden. Luckily I found from the catalogue this even there was no mentioning that Patek made a few with a special (darker) blue dial for the exhibition. One ended to my watch box and it is always a huge pleasure to wear it.

The Special Editions for New York were plentiful and there were some really fantastic watches.

What do you think? I think it's fantastic and I love the combination of World Time and Minute Repeater. The dial is to die for.

The night version is for sure as great.

I pray that this watch will appear to the Collection in platinum and some exciting map or picture made in enamel. I started already to save my pennies for that. I found my Minute Repeater. Now I just need to wait and save.

The other NY Specials were also impressive. Because we Europeans have no access to these watches, Ed called the room of NY Special Collection the "Torture Room". That's what it was!

I loved how the World Time looked. Luckily, NYC is not my city and I can wait with patience the standard platinum version. Ladies' 7200/50 made my wife ill. The watch had everything she's dreaming about but unfortunately it's not for us. When we came home, my wife said "there's a Lange Saxonia also with MoP dial. Because I can't get the beautiful NY 7200/50, could I at least get a Lange? It is not as nice but it would help me to suffer." I promised to consider.

Patek is clearly very proud of their Advanced Research project. The AR watches were presented both in London and in NYC.

In NYC also the newest, 5650G was presented.

I have the last three ones: 5450P, 5550P and 5650G. Indeed, Patek has a reason to be very proud of the Advanced research.

Already in London Patek presented many Rare Handcrafts pieces.

I was offered the Titanic. I did not know if I should laugh or cry! Titanic on the wrist of a shipping man is as tasteful as a plane hitting the Twin towers on 9/11 on the wrist of an airline pilot.

The NY Rare Handcrafts were not any worse.

I will handle soon 5088P. It has also great matching cufflinks.

There was a great watch both in London and NYC.

REF. 130 -WRIST CHRONOGRAPH WITH PULSOMETER. DIAMETER 35.1 MM, THICKNESS 11.5 MM, MADE IN STEEL BETWEEN 1927 - 1937. I indeed hope that this watch was selected to the Exhibitions to show us a little bit of future...

I would guess the next Grand Exhibition will again be in two years. This time it would be the turn of Far East. Singapore or Hong Kong, I will be there.

Like I wrote, I went to the Exhibition three separate times. Even I have handled more than one Patek earlier, this Exhibition proved me once again that Patek is my Brand. The big thing for me was that now I know what kind of Minute Repeater I need to get and also the understanding that my Watch Cabinet is pretty empty without at least one good example of Rare Handcrafts.

Thank you Patek for giving again some 25,000 people the opportunity to see your Watch Art and start Dreaming.

Kari

You are indeed a most fortunate man and a special customer of the London salon. Ed is indeed a star as he always has been. I hope to meet you at the Asian show either in Hong Kong or Singapore in 2019!

Thanks - I'll be there!

Nobody told me that there would be the next Grand Exhibition nor where it would be organised. I made just a lucky guess and I know that Mr. Stern visits very often Singapore... So see you there! Best, Kari

Fingers crossed!

I would love for it to be in Singapore as it is close by and besides all the SIngapore ADs are also based in Malaysia so it will give me time to establish a relationship to enable me to have an outside chance on obtaining a novelty!

Singapore would be quite a natural place.

And it's always such a great pleasure visiting there. Best, Kari

I’m near certain Lionel Richie wrote a song about you, Kari.

Nice reading :)

It's interesting reading about people's thoughts and what is everyone's different perspective on an event or a watch. You know, I've also been thinking at what I would like if I were to get a Minute Repeater. I love the 5029P (a 10-piece edition to commem...

Interesting Mark

 By: sham1 : July 27th, 2017-21:06
that you like the 5029P too. Many have forgotten how lovely this repeater was in its relatively small case, Breguet hands and numerals. And thank you for the confirmation that the 2019 event will be in Singapore. I shall reserve the entire month of July 2...

Which rare hand crafted watch

 By: Folaly : July 27th, 2017-22:12
From the exhibition, you would consider to own ?

If I could,

 By: dr.kol : July 28th, 2017-01:53
the MR plus WT belongs to the same group as the Rare Handcrafts. That would be my choice. If I should go for a watch listed as Rare Handcrafts, I would go for a pocket watch. Probably the First Step on the Moon. Best, Kari

Totally agree

Colors on the MR and pocket watches are beyond real. I found the colors on the wood marquetry dial not as vivid . That is why I have a mixed feeling about them

Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts from the Grand Exhibition

I was fortunate to have one visit at the Grand Exhibition in New York but wish I had done more. Unfortunately my schedule did not allow for more, but I must say it was a most memorable visit. It was first class all the way. The scope, the arrangement, the...

My strong guess is that the combination of WT and MR will appear to the standard collection.

It is simply so expensive to develop such a movement that they can't limit the output to 10 or 20 watches. When it appears, surely platinum will also come at certain point. See you in Singapore? Best, Kari

Entire globe GF style ;)

 By: keks : July 30th, 2017-02:41
GF has a piece with an entire globe rotating on a pole to pole axis on the dial, perhaps Patek will throw a rotating enamel globe in one of their 2019 editions Titanium edition on my wrist (not my watch I must add): ...

Perhaps you are right, but something tells me it will not happen before the Singapore exhibition....

 By: keks : July 29th, 2017-21:36
as it would make sense to have it there for some special editions made for the Asian market. Hope to see you in Singapore 2019!

I'm planning to move to Singapore towards the end of the year.

No, the special pieces of Singapore Grand Exhibition are not the only reasons. Best, Kari

I go there very often, next time in three weeks.

I would like living in Finland much more but business is business. The taxation is very attractive and it does not harm to get a couple of watches tax free. Best, Kari

Makes sense from business and tax perspective

Also absence of crime is a huge plus... But will you drive a fiat there or leave it in Europe?

Fiat stays here, as well as my Beetle.

 By: dr.kol : July 30th, 2017-03:15
I will be travelling a lot between Europe and Singapore and in Singapore it's going to be just hard work. Let's see how I'll tolerate it. Might be that later I will take also the family permanently there or then I'll employ a good CEO to Singapore. Time w...

Will you join also Singapore?

When the dates are confirmed, I'll book a nice room for myself from Mandarin Oriental. It will be great to meet many friends from this forum. Best, Kari

Thank you Kari.

I've been to NYC 57 times in the last eight years, but unfortunately the stars could not align this time. However your post (and those of other Purists) made up for it, thank you! Fully agree on the MR - of course it's when jet lagged that you need a remi...
