5170P vs 5070P

Mar 23, 2017,04:09 AM

Now that the 5170P has been announced, for me it's a true contender or even better then the 5070P.

The 5070 has as everyone knows a beautiful case, dial, applied numerals, nice font of numbering,...
The 5170 on the other hand is for me (and most purists) clearly a step down: Breguet numerals, no scale, case design,...
Until 20th March the 5170 could not compete with any 5070

But yesterday the launch of the 5170P
Completely different then existing 5170 collection: Tachymetre scale, font of seconds/minutes very elegant compared to existing 5170, diamond markers better then Breguet applied numerals.
And a beautiful dial on picture (black/dark blue) which in real will be absolutely stunning.

In a few words for me at first sight the 5170P wins over the 5070P.
The 5170P sets apart from the rest over the 5170 collection while the 5070P has just another material and dial color compared to the other references of 5070.

Patek: congratulations with this 5170P! I truly hope that one day I would be able to say that I am a proud owner of the 5170P!

So am looking forward to comments of other Purists: do you prefer to 5170P or 5070P.

Without any doubt!

 By: sham1 : March 23rd, 2017-04:16
I would prefer the 5170P. I like the fact that bezel is smaller compared to the 5070P, I like the fact that the watch is more wearable, I even like the diamond markers which contrast beautifully against the dial. A sure winner in my books! Sorry gentlemen...

Balance the score!

 By: JBP99P : March 23rd, 2017-06:45
As an owner of a 5170G (white dial), I chose the watch over the 5070 for it's better proportions and dial. As such I eagerly awaited the reveal of the 5170P and it hasn't disappointed, it is stunning! and winner for me over the 5070P in many ways.

5070p

But I admit the 5170p is also a great piece

5070p

 By: Miles_151 : March 23rd, 2017-04:26
For me too but I will need to see the 5170p in the flesh before I can be 100% sure. I do like the 5170 very much size wise but will always prefer the Lemania based movement 5070. The 5170p is all a bit dark for me. M

5070P wins....but....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 23rd, 2017-04:41
.....i do agree that this is the best 5170 yet. In fact, it is a superb 5170 and I was very tempted. But..... Case of the 5070 is just more pleasing for me. Dial on the 5170 is on the darker side for my taste whereas the dial on the 5070P just hasn't been...

Its beautiful , -IF-...

 By: skyeriding : March 23rd, 2017-04:44
IF, only they put the correct subseconds at 1/4s instead of 1/5s to match the 4Hz movement it'd be perfect! Regards, skyeriding

I'm not good at this math

By: Mark in Paris : March 23rd, 2017-08:44
Can you please explain me what are the equivalence and maybe the formulas to know how many marks should be put for 4Hz, 2.5 Hz etc ? I would write it down :p Thanks you! Best, Mark

This will be a little messy, I hope you can follow my text...

 By: skyeriding : March 23rd, 2017-09:11
A watch having xx Hz, multiply that by 2 to get "how many ticks per second it makes" i.e. the beats per second. So for instance, the 5070 has a 2.5Hz. That means, every second the watch makes five ticks (or, 18,000 per hour). Now, minus one to that - that...

That's perfectly clear, thanks a lot I'll keep it in my books!

By: Mark in Paris : March 23rd, 2017-09:32
I would even create a post to share it if you don't mind (or do not hesitate to do it one day if you wish). It is always nice to know and people are often happy to learn Best, Mark

I don't mind at all! I'd be gratified.

 By: skyeriding : March 23rd, 2017-09:38
I feel that the best way to present this information clearly would be to have an infographic or some reference photos/gif/video in action. This is one issue that I learnt/noticed after Moritz here pointed it out - ever since, I could never not notice it w...

Can anyone precisely stop the time

 By: watch-er : March 23rd, 2017-11:10
to eight ticks per second. My point being even though the cadence does not match the register, as is so often pointed out, can you actually tell it in use. I assume PP believes you can not.

With a 4Hz movement (8bps), you'd have typically three subsecond indices between each minute indice

 By: skyeriding : March 23rd, 2017-16:49
This would account for all eight ticks. The seconds hand should stop precisely halfway in between each subsecond indice to account for the 8bps. In practice, it would still be notable when you stop the chronograph - when you look upclose. You can tell the...

5070P all the way. I don't like diamond indices, the eternal location of the 2 sub dials below the 3 / 9 line...

 By: amanico : March 23rd, 2017-04:52
The hour and minute hands shape, too, and the fact that they strangely are luminous... Without forgetting that the level of decoration of the 5070 movement is higher than the 5170. So, no match for me, 5070P all the way! Best, Nicolas

Hmm I'm not sure for the level of decoration Nicolas

By: Mark in Paris : March 23rd, 2017-08:57
I had a look at them (separetely though) and couldn't really give an answer. The 2 or 3 inward angles in the Lemania OK. Even if many other well known high end calibers don't have them. Otherwise, the chamferring and polishing, cotes de Geneve look the sa...

I've always liked the 5170 very much, but I would say 5070.

 By: RussW : March 23rd, 2017-05:23
5070 more sporty, 5170 more elegant, and I favour the more sporty look. The big let down for me is the case of the 5170, I would prefer it to be more interesting.

completely overhauled

 By: serali : March 23rd, 2017-05:24
it took pp 5-6 years to correct this and they make it right at last.....

5170P for me

 By: keks : March 23rd, 2017-05:27
It is an aesthetic preference after all. I respect the historical significance of the 5070 and original design, but on my wrist I would still rather wear the new 5170P...

As much as I was eagerly waiting

 By: beejo : March 23rd, 2017-05:27
For the 5170P,The diamond indices turned me off my books the most diamonds that I can accept is the tiny one at 6 o\'clock. 5070P without thinking twice Best, Ahmed

Ahmed that is bang on.

Only diamond to have. M.

An unnecessary way

 By: beejo : March 23rd, 2017-06:30
Of pushing the price so high to shorten the waiting list and make more money(my speculation),They have seen enthusiasts ready to pay huge amounts of money for the 5070P why not push the 5170P to the same budget,Exactly what happened with the 5131P.Smart w...

I think true collectors and purists aren\'t their target anymore. Just do the Math on the 40th anniversary Nautilus models. With Gems and Platinum???? Why??? How does this possibly pay homage to the Nautilus???? Easy answer. It doesn\'t but boy oh boy loo...

I agree totally

 By: watch-er : March 23rd, 2017-11:13
There was absolutely no reasons to put diamonds on the 5170P dial which collectors have typically shunned.

That's a question I ask myself too

By: Mark in Paris : March 23rd, 2017-11:26
There is certainly a reason I'll be curious to know why the brand has decided to do it. It has an impact as non-diamond people will most likely have to go toward other material (like the 2 different G versions) or back to the 5070 if one wants P. Did they...

Well, I'm not sure that diamond markers push the price up that much

By: Mark in Paris : March 23rd, 2017-09:09
Hard to tell but usually Pt versions for 50 to 100 K€ watches cost around 10 to 15 K€ more than a gold model, thus it looks (roughly) around the price imho (around 74K€ in France with VAT for a 5170G). Of course it is impossible to be sure but I would say...

I appreciate your words

 By: beejo : March 23rd, 2017-09:53
A lot Mark,But the watches.........I don\'t Plus if the made an extra €5K per watch and sold 200 only which I believe they are going to sell more it\'s a million Euros out of nowhere. Best, Ahmed

You are right mark...

 By: Fricks : March 23rd, 2017-11:29
.... actually its compared to the 5170G the P version is very well priced

At least 2 who chose the 5170P - I was afarid I would be the only one

 By: ambel : March 23rd, 2017-06:05
But seeing only 2people are having these feeling towards the 5170P will be a rather easy watch to find at your AD (lol)

LoL [nt]

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 23rd, 2017-06:12

I would definitly go for the 5170P as I am one of the probably very few members of this forum who really dislikes the 5070

 By: cayenne1200 : March 23rd, 2017-07:16
The new 5170P is a great shot of PP imho. The dial with the Stone markers looks simply fantastic!

+1

= 4

That's a difficult answer to give as I didn't see the 5170P in the metal yet

By: Mark in Paris : March 23rd, 2017-08:27
However, as of today, I must say that I love this 5170P, as you say, it also appeal to me much more than the previous versions. I lvoe the color and how it is done, I love the printings decoration, the scale, the hands... I love it. Now, about the diamond...

Great honest reply Mark.

 By: Miles_151 : March 23rd, 2017-08:35

5070P...the ultimate stealth classic Patek chrono

 By: vitalsigns : March 23rd, 2017-08:30
I like the proportions of the 5170P better, but all is lost with the addition of the diamonds markers, which I see as a cynical move to squeeze more revenue out of Patek's customer base. Cheers, John

 By: CL : March 23rd, 2017-08:54
but this piece changes everything. The diamond on the dial feels 'correct'. This piece is beautiful and a big potential to be a classic. I love it

Current score 5170P vs 5070P: 8-7

5170P vs 5070P

 By: Grisar : March 23rd, 2017-13:15
Well, I was in Basel this afternoon and "examined" the 5170P from the showcase window. It's a nice chronograph, I have to say, maybe the nicest among all 5170s, for my taste. Since the diamond indexes are thin and decently applied, you don't really see th...

5070p

 By: rcg412 : March 23rd, 2017-17:11
no contest. The 5170p is gaudy. The 5070p is timeless.

5070 for me too.

 By: cervantes77 : March 23rd, 2017-21:17
The case design of the 5170 leaves a lot to be desired for me. It's flat, with 21mm lugs, and the dial sits far from the crystal. Along with the sub dials below the equator the watch lacks the coherence of a chrono. The new dial layout is a bit better but...

By: COUNT DE MONET : March 23rd, 2017-23:51
The 5170 P is technically superior, smaller in size and hence more classic and a much darker, in terms of mood, watch than the 5070, wich I find very, very appealing! And it has got diamonds on the dial, wich I like also a lot. The 5070 P is a name in the...

as much as I do not like diamonds on a watch

 By: sham1 : March 24th, 2017-03:12
I believe the diamond markers on the 5170P are subtle and actually suit the watch. Yes it means a higher price unfortunately, but it actually adds class to the watch rather than taking class over from it. For most of us, psychologically if we hear diamond...

My 2 cents

By: Time to watch : March 24th, 2017-07:55
The 5170p imho trumps all other 5170s no doubt. Let me start by saying that I have never purchased a watch with diamonds on the dial or the bezel, however , the diamond indexes on the 5170p imo are understated as far as diamonds on a patek go and they add...
