... but prefer the price of modern. wink

I like the size of vintage watches, and the design. The 3448 is the perfect layout for a perpetual calendar. Patek should re-introduce it. You don't need to mess with perfection. The 5320 is nice, but doesn't compare to the 3448.

Similarly, the 3940 is superior to its more modern successors.

And the 570. Perfect size for a time-only watch. Perfect Calatrava. Why not have a modern version of it?

Vintage and/or Modern Pateks - Which do you collect and why? And assuming you collect both, which do you like to wear?

 By: patekova : April 3rd, 2017-13:43
It is often said that the line of demarcation between vintage and modern is around 1985. So, 2499, 3448 and 3450 are generally considered vintage. 3940 and 3970 are generally considered to mark the beginning of modern. The modern era brings in more common...

A lot depends on what I am doing and where....

.....I have a share of modern and vintage and I tend to wear them all. I wouldn't say I have a preponderance for one over the other. However, as a daily wearer, I would tend to go modern whereas if i am going out for dinner or doing something special, I w...

Very interesting topic Patekova

I think that you summed-up several of these issues well. The vintage watches have a charm that I like to see from time to time (like some old cars). By the way, there is quite a diversity in that field. A rounder early model doesn't look like the flater s...

one wears a particular watch for a few months period. I guess you can kind of bond or "re bond" with a watch that way. My attention span is way too short to do that. I tell my wife I can never be faithful to one ... watch. I am constantly switching back a...

I love the look and wear of the vintage pieces , something I feel modern pieces do not have . But as Joe has said , it is personal prefernce . I love wearing my old calatravas or vintage rectangular pieces The size fits me and they actually represent good...

Thanks Julian for your reply and strong endorsement of vintage. I totally agree with you that Calatravas and rectangles are

excellent value. Rectangles were once the most desired and expensive vintage shape for time only watches. They have the great 9-90 movement, are beautiful, rare and a great bargain. I have none right now but am on the lookout for something mint and unusua...

The definition of "vintage" is also quite relevant...

 By: Baron - Mr Red : April 4th, 2017-00:55
.....the 5110, for example, is one I would not call vintage but nor is it truly modern. That "transition" phase (at least in my head it is a transition phase) often fills a nice wearing "gap". I do think I look at it based on two key factors. First, is th...

Thanks Joe for your expanded reflection. Your point about "transition" pieces (neither exactly vintage nor modern) is spot on. Another example I think is 5020.

 By: patekova : April 4th, 2017-06:00
Like 5110, 5020 doesn't quite fit into either the vintage time period or a design considered to be purely modern. 5110 certainly seems to have a loyal following and has become a "classic". Another transition piece I think is the 1st series 3970 - snap bac...

the "younger crowd" is just not into "classical elegance". So IMHO Thierry is trying to reach out to that segment of watch buyers by offering cutting edge, thoroughly modern designs (despite claims that they are based in part on historical precedents), su...

Wayne Dyer...you have a lot to answer for! I keep visualising it on my wrist...blue sky, sunny and warm, blue jeans, crisp white shirt, chilled glass of white burgundy....... ........and 5930G aggggh.

I think you emphasized an important element

This "transition" phase you're talking about it hte last know one if we put aside the current catalog. Hence, an important part of members participating on the Patek forum have been livng and growing with it for a long while, just as the members in the 19...

i hear you......

......i keep looking at it. On the current list, there are probably 5 or 6 that I keep looking at. This is one of those.

Thanks Mark for your well reasoned and germane perspective. While sometimes not initially comfortable, things change and need to change. Of course,

 By: patekova : April 4th, 2017-11:09
change merely for change's sake usually does not work out well. If change creates a loss of brand identity that will become a problem. Best, patekova

Perfect example of a watch the appreciation for which changed dramatically - 5020. Almost universally reviled during its run. "Awful", "hideous", "Un Patek" and so on. Maybe a total
