That case belongs with a cal 501.

I have a Dennison cased cal 501, case ref 897914, date letterJ for 1958/9, movement number 16.4 million. These are big heavy cases (33g of 18kt).

No doubt that a cal 501 went inside that case, but I've heard lot of reports about the cal 501 failing for some reason, so probably the reason for some tinkering

Hopefully Andrew can resurrect this old beauty

Cheers, Paul

Another poor old Sea Dog...................

Oh dear! Way back in the dim and distant 1950s these were just fabulous watches but time doesn't treat them well. If you're in any doubt, this poor specimen started out in life as a cal 501 Seamaster and that lovely old 18kt heavyweight case is datable to...

I'm not so sure the dial . . .

 By: Dr No : March 11th, 2013-09:57
. . . has been refinished, Andrew. Considering all the dial + movement packages readily available on ebay, my guess is Dr Franken found a mint dial and movement to fit a case with trashed originals. Perversely disturbing thought, isn't it? The rush to the...

What is the case reference number?

 By: gatorcpa : March 11th, 2013-18:05
I just don't think that a bumper automatic would fit properly in a case for a rotor automatic. The rotor autos were slightly wider and taller than the bumpers. The discoloration of the bumper rotor doesn't trouble me that much. These sometimes got unevenl...

It will be a Dennison case and from 1959/60.....

 By: aroma : March 12th, 2013-01:09
So it's definitely a Franken. Maybe there's more room in the Dennison case for the bumper. Cheetah

Room ? it would be tight! by .1 mm

Hi Aroma It looks like a nice watch.. Please confirm that the dennison case is a waterproof snap back . Can you post a pic of the movement and inside caseback ? I did a little digging.... movement size.... Caliber 352 D: 28.10 mm Height : 5.40 mm Caliber ...

Hi Bill...........

These are the only photos I have available to me: That could be a slight scuff mark below the PAT APPLIED FOR but there don't seem to be any corresponding marks on the rotor Cheers Andrew ...

Hi Aroma Nice photos.... so I see a case serial number... But how do you know that this case was produced for a 500 series movement ? Just a date of manufacture ? Its a water proof snapback that was used by Omega bumper movements. I think it is hard to sa...

A definite re-case Bill - no doubts at all

 By: aroma : March 18th, 2013-05:32
Hi Bill, That case is a genuine Dennison Seamaster case which was produced from 1956 until 1960 - they only ever housed the cal 501 auto. This case is stamped with a hallmark and serial number both of which date it to 1959/60 - that is long after Omega di...

Well, I have 'rescued' it..........

 By: aroma : March 20th, 2013-02:12
and it's on its way to me as I write. I haven't changed my mind on it being a re-case however, I have been looking for the original design Dennison Seamaster for some time now and have seen many expensive and suspect ones with the cal 501. I have come to ...

............ if I want to 'resurrect' this old beauty after all - I have it on my wrist at the moment and am quite taken with it - it's keeping time to within 20 secs/day which is good enough for me. Are these old 352s difficult to service (it was last se...
