One shot of the new Urwerk UR-210 BPT Royal Hawk (funny name no? 😉) in DLC-coated platinum and titanium

Hi all,

You probably already know that I’m not particularly tempted by very modern looking watches (Urwerk, Richard Mille...). But, sometimes, you try a watch without any particular bias and you tell to yourself “Hey, pretty cool”.

I had such a feeling with this new Urwerk during the last SIHH. Made of platinum and in a pretty good size of 53.6mm (length) x 43.8mm (width) x 17.8mm (height), you can trust me, it weighs its weight! But, once you put it on your wrist, its size and weight almost disappear as it fits your wrist perfectly and very comfortably. Something unexpected for me.

Urwerk always uses the same main complication in its creations namely wandering hours even if, of course, its different interpretations can noticeably differ from one model to another (I pay tribute to Urwerk for its creativity in this field).

Even if it’s not an entirely new model (only the colouring and materials change), you have maybe here the most interesting iteration with 3 cubic satellites and, for each of them, 4 numerals which give you the 2x12 hours in a day. In addition, this black/red combo works very well.

These cubic satellites make regularly a quarter-turn rotation to progressively display the right hour (or numeral) before entering in the minute track at 0. In addition to this amazing visual effect, a kind of “retrograde bridge” comes above the right numeral when it exactly starts a new hour at 0. Really cool to see in action.

Another element which is absolutely crazy about this watch is the possibility for its wearer to know the winding efficiency of his timepiece over the last two hours. Depending on your activity (playing tennis or drinking a beer while watching tennis on TV seated on your sofa 😁), you can adjust the use of the rotor.

Thanks to a rotating selector (visible on the back side), you can choose to use the full potential of the rotor (full), just a part (reduced) or nothing (stop) which means that your watch is now an hand-wound one and not an automatic one anymore. Cool no?

It’s funny to compare this Urwerk to my Audemars Piguet Star Wheel as they share exactly the same complication but they have absolutely nothing else in common. But, that’s why we love watches no? All our different tastes can be satisfied 😉

I won’t trade my Star Wheel versus this Urwerk but I was very pleased to try it.

What are your thoughts?

Best wishes

Alkiro

Not my cup of tea. But very cool looking, esp the rotor control is quite cool.

Alkiro, thank you for sharing. I've written it a million times, but this is one of the primary values of our forum.

Based on simple bias alone I generally would never give a piece like this a second look. But with your introduction, I (and others) are able to consider, understand, and appreciate a new timepiece, whether the aesthetics work for each of us or not. I now ...

Thank you very much for your kind words 🙏

I'm a big fan, even if this might not be great for my wrist.

You've highlighted what is great about our little passion, two watches with the same basic time display of wandering hours but the execution is worlds apart. The AP with a classic case in classic metal in a classic size, the actual wandering hours display...
