Part I: The watches

Feb 19, 2007,19:44 PM

Above: Dirk Janssen examining some chronograph wristwatches

Above: According to Mark, these were based on Swiss Valjoux chronograph movements

Above: Just some of the immense number of pocket watches in the collection

Above: Stopwatch for the Soviet airforce

Above: A rectangular form movement, possibly one of the few still in existence

Above: A pocketwatch for the blind

Below is one of the newest watches in the collection, a navy divers watch, complete with the issue canister.

Most of the watches shown above are early Soviet watches, from 1917 to mid 20th century. As a result most of them are based on various Swiss or Germa movements, instead of being truly in-house. Even the rectangular form movement shown above is based on a Swiss ebauche, albeit a round one which the Soviets modified. One could see the obvious progress in watchmaking technology as the Soviet Union developed, which will be seen in the watches in the following posts. Thanks Bernard, SJX and of course Mark for the opportunity to be part of this event. It was both an inspirational and humbling experience for me, as Mark took time to explain the history of Russian watch making and highlight very interesting aspects of hi...

Mark epitomises the true collector...
