Like the levels of need. I believe that I have experienced the first two. Not sure about the third and definitely not the fourth. I have been fortunate to know quickly what I would like and trusting the instinct has served me well.

The times that have led me to part with a watch was more because of the desire to upgrade but even at that time I needed a friend's help to pick out the ones to go. Haven't regretted the decision.

PuristS input and advice needed

 By: Ronald Held : December 3rd, 2016-18:11
Did not sleep much last night ruminating over a decision. Have to post now so I can sleep better. I have decided on a watch extremely far out of my price range. Even saved to the next major big occasion, i would fall short. I would have to sell most to al...

I think it depends on how passionate you are

 By: mpg13 : December 3rd, 2016-18:28
Are you so in love that you would make the sacrifice without a second thought or are you concerned about having regrets. If it's the latter (and I suspect it is since you asked the question) you might be better off waiting. Just my opinion after making th...

Yes, exactly what I was going to say.

 By: Bounce781 : December 3rd, 2016-18:41
Either you are sure about it OR you will be riddled with regret. I\'ve done that one or twice. Remember the pieces you sell off you will not only lose them but also the collective effort of building up that collection.

I just did what you are thinking about doing...

 By: Aquaracer1 : December 3rd, 2016-19:56
Don't do it. 9/10 times you'll regret it either in the pieces you lost or in the money you lost. PS: What are you eying??

I will say this

 By: descartes1 : December 3rd, 2016-21:13
Whenever I have bought a piece as a compromise I have always gone back later to get the one I really wanted. This suggests that if you are thinking of trading ones you are lukewarm about for a real passion it is worth doing.

I will try to answer every question. In terms of buying I have had few regrets on the higher range..

Watches. I might regret selling them but I cannot do with without significant slashing of pieces. I never have absolute certainty about a purchase but have learned not to settle.

This is a multifaceted quandary. First is the watch that significant to you that it is a must have. It would seem to possess you but if the whole process doesn't past the sleep test then don't do it.

If it such a special piece does it give joy? Do the other pieces and electronics give joy? If the latter is true you may regret parting with your current hi ends. If this watch is such an expensive piece would you be willing and able to wear the wAtch in ...

No need to talk passion to a PuristS. Passion for any watch goes from...

GOTTA have it now!! to it would be a fine addition to my collection to oh well why not and finally #*#^%^%^> why did I buy this??? if it was a purchase within a few months the drive to have it is close to paramount. Timescale of a decade and it is murkier...

Why not, Ronald???

Selling all your pieces to get THE piece, that is something to really be considered, IF: You are not selling watches you will deeply regret: A watch you will have very hard time finding, or funding ( you know, these watches which costed nothing some years...

Nicolas and other: none of this is easy, why is why I ask for advice. This will take 5 to 10 years..

 By: Ronald Held : December 4th, 2016-14:11
To happen. Will I be alive and or able to appreciate it? How many more years will I admire it? Will I accept parting with A UN PC GMT, Urwerk and Devon Tread for starters. Will my watch be in production in 10 years? As to my goal, I do not post it until I...

We are a lot dealing with the same issue, Ronald.

 By: amanico : December 4th, 2016-14:13
I am currently thinking about letting a lot of my watches go to fund 4 or 5 other watches... Best, Nicolas

Still a difficult decision as the vintage market is not..

 By: Ronald Held : December 4th, 2016-16:35
What it was a decade or more ago. I wish you well in working it out.

I am almost done in the vintage world. Maybe 10 more watches and then basta.

 By: amanico : December 4th, 2016-22:23
But I agree. Prices are going insane, good vintage watches are rarer and rarer... Best, nicolas

I do not know if I will be done in a thematic sense, versus ...

Just stopping due to rising prices or lack of enough appeal.

Wise... [nt]

Hah. Nicolas. Ten more watches and you will have

A DECIMAS? I am now buying tulips. I have heard prices are at a 3 century low.

LOL! [nt]

Yes that is true. (nt)

Forgot to do this before I went to sleep...

I would like permission from a Moderator ro discuss watches I might sell on CM without violating the rules. The same goes for estimating values.

Ronald, for you, it is not an issue.

 By: MichaelC : December 4th, 2016-08:39
Please continue the discussion. You are very thoughtful to ask, but your long track record speaks for itself. You are a real Purist my friend.

If there is a dilemma, then don't

 By: Poky : December 4th, 2016-04:13
IMO if you have to think about it for so long, it will mean you should not go ahead with it. Hesitation is a defence mechanism, not always a good thing but it is there to protect humans from a harm! I was in a similar situation in the spring; sleepless ni...

I think many of us have contemplated such a move before

 By: MichaelC : December 4th, 2016-08:48
Leastways, I definitely have. I have really made an effort the past several years to only acquire watches that I fully believe will be "keepers". I think I am there now, I can't imagine what I would sell out of my small collection. So even as I continuall...

Polk and MichaelC:keepers for life is time varying. Keeper for life is difficult..

 By: Ronald Held : December 4th, 2016-13:43
With new wright limitations, old keepers now unworn but be considered in a new light.

It depends on the piece.... and how much you will miss the others!

 By: andrewluff : December 5th, 2016-04:48
I have debated this a few times, sell most or a lot of my collection for a BIG piece... until now I still like the idea but have not done it... Will the new purchase satisfy you more than all the current ones? Cheers Andrew

In principle the new one will initially eclipse the old ones. Too hard to predict how long the affair...

With the Big one lasts. I do have some time to change what gets sold.

Given the current market...

 By: CR : December 5th, 2016-05:10
... I wonder about the rarity of the piece you're considering (or uniqueness -- if it's a certain LE # that you like, etc.). I'm probably not the only person who has noticed pieces coming to market lately that we often don't see, and they sell at much low...

I really feel for you. It might sound patronizing but please read on, I really do. I remember crossing PD in Basel som 4 years ago. This was his post- Simplicity period… We chatted, told him how sad I was to have missed the Simplicity bandwagon and that I...

I don't think it matters what path you choose

 By: Harry2 : December 7th, 2016-18:57
The question is whether you are able to commit to either choice. Even if you lose money selling everything you will have something undeniably special. If you simply let it go then that\'s ok because you can\'t have everything, and the fact this special wa...

Always a quandry

 By: jml_watches : December 8th, 2016-01:04
I appreciate where you are - its always difficult making such decisions. All I can do is echo what others have said - will you be able to get the watch again in the future if you forego it now & secondly is it worth giving up a large chunk or all of your ...
