Circuit of the Americas

The Porsche Motorsport - Chopard partnership was successful again at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

Following victories at Le Mans 2016, Nürburgring and Mexico, Porsche Motorsport took their 5th win of the season at the Six Hours of COTA 2016.

They extended their lead in the Manufacturer's rankings of the FIA World Endurance Championship 2016.

The Heat was On

The 6th round of nine championship rounds was held on 17 September 2016 in tropical weather conditions. The race started at 17:00H local time when the ambient temperature was over 35 degree Celsius. The drivers and mechanics were tested to the limit.

As the searing Texan sun set in the West, it became cooler and the Porsche 919 Hybrid cars became stronger.

A strategic undercut during the pit stops helped the winning trio take the lead at mid distance from Audi.

The reigning world champions, Mark Webber, Brendon Hartley and Timo Bernhard in Porsche 919 Hybrid car #1 took their third victory in-a-row.

The Porsche cars romped home in 1st and 4th places, adding to the Manufacturers' points tally. Porsche is clearly leading the WEC manufacturer’s championship with 238 points; ahead of Audi (185) and Toyota (137).

The second Porsche Motorsport trio: Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb, finished 4th but continue to lead in the overall drivers’ world championship by 37.5 points.

Chopard’s ambassador Mark Webber commented: “It was tough racing with fair battles today and Timo’s and Brendon’s drives were awesome. After the start we got into a rhythm. In the middle of the race the situation looked stable. The Audis in front were extremely quick in the heat. We knew we had to do a clean race and if they had stayed that strong we would have pushed them over the line. Despite the heat, our team in the garage did a great job again in the pit stops.”

Chopard’s ambassador Brendon Hartley said: “For us the race went very smoothly. It was clear to us that Audi would have an advantage in the high temperatures at the start, but we were hoping the race would come back to us and it did. After dark, the competition with Audi was much more even. We got the strategy with the Full Course Yellow absolutely right.”
