I'm not sure that it ever did. Dress watches with that caliber likely win out.

Patek's 3589 "Jumbo" Ellipse of the early to late 1970s was 6mm thick and used the same base caliber as the AP (28-255 in Patek-speak). A number of other non-sports models made by Patek, Vacheron, and AP with the 28-255/1120/2120, respectively, might have been thinner than the AP Royal Oak "Jumbo." Also, I'm not sure where you classify the many references that have used the Piguet P.70/71 "9/10" rotor. Separately, there's a huge range of watches that employed the undeniably full-rotor Breguet 8810/8815 (nee Longines L990).
