This car is unfairly judged.

It had the bad fortune of being planned during 1980s boom times and then launched into a global slowdown. Also, the production XJ220 has been critiqued unfairly on the basis of not featuring the all-wheel-drive, active aerodynamics, and V12 engine of the concept car. But the result with the Group B twin-turbo V6 was world-beating performance in the most stunning supercar bodywork since the Miura.
Honestly, the car appears more impressive and relevant in retrospect. There's nothing dated about its appearance, and other supercars from the 1970s and 1980s (e.g., Countach, Jalpa, Testarossa, Isdera Imperator, Ciezeta Moroder, and even the Ferrari F40) look their age. Any member of the general public can accurately gauge the age of those other machines, but the XJ220 and Porsche 959 still look fresh today. Moreover, the twin-turbo V6 supercar lives in the modern day LeMans-winning Ford GT, so even the power concept has aged well.
Best,
Tim
