Road Trip with new Porsche Macan
May 29, 2017,11:20 AM
I was navigator a couple days ago, when a friend bought a car in Northern California and we drove it back home. Our intention was to stay overnight in his family's Sierra cabin, but snow, broken security system and other factors forced us to drive on past the cabin. We then discovered it was the annual "Mule Days" weekend in Bishop, and there were no hotel rooms for 100 miles. We were forced to drive all the way - arriving home at 3:30 am. But the drive was pleasant enough, although I struggled a bit to understand and explain the car's features, using the owner's manual in the dark.
We flew up the state in 90 minutes. This mask / disguise deters people from taking the middle seat on SouthWest Airlines
Throwing away our disguises, we were greeted and shuttled to the dealership by our tall blonde Customer Experience Manager, Nancy, in her black Volvo V60. A very nice, 30-year veteran in new car sales.
While they did the paperwork, I snooped around the service area. Nancy has sold three 918s for this store!
Let's get to the road trip now ... I have to say our record snowfall of 2017 is very evident. The ski areas we passed through were still operation - at Mammoth they hope to snow ski through the 4th of July weekend!
There was snow on both sides of the Sierra Nevada, and several of the main E-W passes are still closed.
We stopped to have lunch with a friend, and show off the car.
We saw a few interesting vehicles around Reno.
Bright Orange-Red seemed to be very popular.
This guy in the Miata was munching on a fat 2-inch cigar.
I haven't driven this stretch down Highway 395 before - the views are beautiful.
All the fields seemed green and wet.
Pass Closed. Too Much Snow.
The car was hungry too.
Mono Lake was full of water. No salt structures poking out.
We re-entered the Golden State.
This raging river was right up to the edge of the road.
I like scenic shots like this for my screen desktop.
Traffic was pretty light most of the way
Gerber / PuristS P10 my watch for the day
Optional clock on the Macan
At Mammoth Mountain we saw more snow (8000 feet) and it got colder. Maybe 70ยบ F
, The town was mobbed with last-of-the-season skiiers and Mule Days tourists. We had a quick dinner and left town.
Last shot in the dusky twilight
Nighttime in the Porsche cockpit, playing Van Morrison's Hymns to the Silence as we looked out at Death Valley.
Approximately 1 am, the truck stop was plenty busy.
Thanks for joining us on the trip.
