Vintage Seiko at Veterans Memorial

Dec 19, 2020,09:03 AM

Today marks the 50th day we have walked, each day wearing a different Seiko. I had no idea of the number of Seikos in our collection, and as I sorted through my watch cabinet, repair bench, storage bins, etc they kept turning up. I have been busy fixing them too, ordering parts, changing batteries and so forth, because I don't think it's fair to count non-runners. Today I'm wearing a 6602 manual wind wristwatch that has been apart for at least 10 years (in a box, in a drawer) It's the same movement that appeared yesterday in my pocket watch. I assembled this last night, put a suitable strap on and it ran beautifully all night. So it's on my wrist now!

A glimpse of the watch:

Having enjoyed the comments about Mount Helix yesterday, today we went to Mount Soledad, the other high peak in San Diego, at its northwest corner. The sky was clear and the views spectacular.

Here we are looking south.

A couple minutes later, you can see how the light is changing.

Downtown, San Diego bay, Coronado Bridge -- all places that we have walked in the past 7 weeks. I can't believe how sharp this image is -- the clarity of the original is fantastic! Those lights on the hillside in Tijuana, MX are at least 25 miles away.

Views to the north

Here's the cross itself. This memorial sits atop a piece of land now owned by a non-profit organization (to eliminate church/state conflicts). My friend Martin is one of the directors and keeps us informed about developments here, but we only come up about a couple times a year. The light is really nice.

From any angle.

Since we have about 10 minutes, we get onto a trail and walk out away from the monument. My wife is dressed warmly, just in case it snows 😉.

Oops, mistake. But nice enough to save. Remember it's winter here (in a day or two).

All my favorite places, in one photo.

It looks like a wildfire is just starting on a hillside in Mexico. Too bad.

An early flight out -- some people still traveling while we are cooped up?

I have to comment on this photo - the island you see is in Mexico, more than 30 miles from where I am taking this picture. The Ocean Beach pier in the foreground is about 10 miles from our vantage point.

About time for the sunrise.

And there it is!

A wider shot shows the sun has burned off the top of that hill...

Mrs. C cleverly got a photo of me taking a photo of the sunrise, including the watch. Bonus points for that! (those things above my cap are antenna; not attached to my head)

Walking back up the hill, holding hands.

Or not.

The Pacific Ocean. You can't see it in this photo, but we could see the outline of San Clemente Island, which is 65 miles to the northwest!

The bird close-ups have been popular, so I tried hard to get a couple. It wasn't easy today.

Like a bird on a wire, like a drunk in a midnight choir ....

I love backlit plant photos.

l might want to change this crystal someday, but I am happy to have the watch as it is.

Thanks for reading along. I will publish a directory of these walks soon.

My wife and I also try to take a walk everyday, in addition to my morning run, and it is a nice, welcome thing to do. My wife (and I) always enjoy business visits to San Diego — Old Town, downtown, waterfront, Oceanside resorts, and Coronado Island. All s...

Today you seem to have gone the extra mile...

Great series again. Man do I love this series of yours. If memory serves me right you once indicated that you estimated to own approx 200 Seiko watches. That means your in for a tough winter my friend 200 - 50 = 150 19 December 150 days = May 18th 2021. A...

Your memory is failing you

Even counting my clocks I don't have that many. My Seiko count including clocks is about 100, I think. Watches are roughly 60, so we have about 10 to go. Let's say we end by New Year's Day (taking off Christmas). We only walk about 2 miles but I take 50-7...

I'll try; maybe have to buy some more watches, eh?

Now that the pressure is off to use all the Seikos ... but I wonder if any more are incoming? I went in a eBay-crazed-mood for a couple days and ordered wacky Seikos right and left! That reminds me of a lyric by Steve Goodman about staying up all night wa...

You have more stamina than I have that early. Winter solstice..

On the 21st at 5:02 ET. How many total watches do you own?

Last year at this time, when I wore them all in December, I think the total was 116

I'm guessing now the total of working watches will be 125-130. Some went away and a few came in, and a couple were revived. I can't bother to count them all again. Mike

I have~40 that work. (nt)
