There was one classic perpetual that always called out to me... the simply classic 3940. Why? Well, many reasons... some are concrete reasons I can describe some are indescribable, just based on feel. While the new 37mm model is better in size, I don't like the busier dial. Numbers and letters are bigger making the dial look more cramped... especially the different sized dates. And I didn't think the 1mm made much of a difference. So I went about searching for a second gen dial 3940.
So I started focusing my search on a 3940J. I will pretty much only wear this for work, with suite, so size, thinness, look are just perfect. ONLY downside of this reference is the lack of a second hand, in my opinion. Oh this would be the perfect classic perpetual if it had a second hand... where the current date dial is (where then will the date go?)...
While searching, I came across many other PP perpetual models, some with second hand even. But non as classic. The size and thinness of the 3940 was unbeatable. Then... then... I stumble on a 5040G in flesh... the one with the breguet hands and arabic numbers (sound of a wrench thrown in), mind changes. Same movement but the dial... the dial... I love breguet hands... and I love arabic numbers on watches. While I do have roman dial watches I really love arabic numbers... So, off I go now hunting for a 5040J.
I came across some. While not as easy to find as a 3940, it's not impossible. I wanted one with full papers, boxes, great conditions and mid 2000s year. Came across many too old, no papers, etc, etc... then I got lucky with a 2009 (last model year before discontinued) model, mint condition, full everything... and it became mine...
Thank you for reading and hope you enjoy these photos... didn't have time to do full photo setup, so just a few simple pictures shot handheld with daylight...
