Aquanaut rubber strap length adjustment

Dear members

I am thinking of adding an Aquanaut (rubber strap) to my collection, can anyone help me to undesrstand how you can adjust the length of the strap.  Once you have cut it to length, can you do fine adjustment at the buckle? how much can you further adjust?  If you change to a leather strap, does it mean there is no adjsutment possible? (unless you do not use the original buckle)
