I think the Lange perpetual is a great choice for a complicated dress piece. The aquanaut is an attractive watch as well, but my issue with it is that it's a currently hype piece with a huge premium, and at the same price point there will be some far more interesting offerings that you can get, both within and outside of Patek. Or you can get something else that's comparable, and save a ton of cash to put towards the 2nd or a 3rd piece. The immediate substitute I can think of for it would be an Overseas, Tim Mosso did a good video comparison here you should check out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNVNhwh1QTA

Also, have you looked at any independents? There are a lot of very interesting options in the price range you're considering. Some of my personal favorites that I would be considering are below in no particular order:

Kari Voutilainen
Gronefeld
Parmigiani Fleurier
FP Journe
Moritz Grossmann
Laurent Ferrier
Lang & Heyne
Romain Gauthier
De Bethune
Urwerk
MB&F

The two watch collection for the guy starting over

 By: 3watchguy : December 12th, 2019-14:14
Good evening gents! Well, it’s evening for me, living in brazil... In the past I’ve had some rolexes ( 6 and 5 digit references ), a few IWC (90’s - early 2000’s), played around with some omegas, and other fun stuff. With the recent market situation and t...

Part II

 By: 3watchguy : December 12th, 2019-15:45
The second watch I’m considering is the Lange 310.026 (Langematik Perpetual in WG,black dial). The first that came to mind was a 3940, which still is, in my head, the watch that first comes to mind when thinking of a contemporary perpetual calendar. But c...

I also have a problem with the 5164 hype

 By: 3watchguy : December 14th, 2019-08:52
I’m definitely not buying the 5164 right now, because I can’t make sense of it over 50k... So the 2nd watch is probably coming first. I’ve considered an overseas, but honestly I’m just not a fan of the aesthetic of the gmt/travel time. I looked at some 49...

One last bit of advice: be patient and enjoy the hunt! I'm currently a 1 watch guy, and looked around for ~3 years before finding the perfect one for myself through an auction. Couldn't be happier with the piece I have now.

Thank you so much for the advice! It’s really appreciated! This is the the main aspect that keeps me in this hobby, the chivalry between us. I’ll definitely enjoy the hunt, I’m not in a hurry at all... let’s see what the future presents! Now your hunt sou...

Keeping it casual / dressy

 By: CastorKrieg : December 13th, 2019-00:50
1. Casual - I would definitely try and get a steel Patek, either Aquanaut or Nautilus. Nautilus obviously can be considered a dress watch more than an Aquanaut (I don't like Aquanaut with a bracelet), but I understand both 5711 and 5712 are out of reach f...

Keeping it Casual / Dressy

In a way I’m more attracted to the aquanaut, especially the 5164. Maybe it’s the low key aspect of the watch, Nautilus is kind of a commodity, these days... i would love to get a 5712, but i wouldn’t replace the 5164 to get it. The Lange 1 Moonphase is a ...

Love the choice of the 5164

I’d replace the Lange with a FPJ Resonance and you’d have an unbeatable 2-watch collection.

Resonance is definitely a grail!

I have to admit that im in love with the idea... If i could get my hands on a black label, it would be unbelievable! Let’s see what the future holds, im in the hunt, and I’ll probably pull the trigger on the dressier/complicated watch first, since 5164’s ...

May I suggest the 1815 chronograph so you can tick the dress watch and chronograph boxes in one go

When i think of lange, the oversized date is probably the main aspect that comes to mind, and for now, I can’t see myself buying one without it... One thing i know for sure is, I’m not going to buy the perpetual without playing around with the idea of a f...
