I was afraid that nobody was interested in this topic.
I am also afraid that it probably is very difficult to discuss life-span for vintage movement, in particular, for Patek because they are high quality movement and Patek will provide service to them forever.
I am now thinking how Patek will make some parts today if necessary.
Although there are many discussion, it looks common sense that life-span of modern watch is likely to be shorter than that of vintage one. This does not mean they did not good job today. I think that they still do their best, but the meaning of the best has been changed from time to time. I think that the best today comes from the balance of quality, cost, design, and etc. Now, my question is that, when Patek needs to make some parts for vintage movement, which standards, old or modern, will they apply? Will they try to make the parts by as much old-fashion as possible, or by making use of our current technology? For very long time, all parts will be replaced eventually. I am thinking that, if all parts will be made in current standards, a vintage movement will eventually be a modern movement with just carrying old design. What do you think?
