As far as I know the 3970 when launched...

in 1986 did not have a sapphire back. The 3971 on the otherhand did. These 2 referrences were merged to form the 3970E which now is available with a sapphire crystal back and a full back.

And yes this model will be discontinued in the near future and I wouldn't be surprsed if it will be replaced by similar model (Patek has been producing manual wind perpetual chronographs for the past 50 years so I'm not sure that they will stop, but this is just my opinion)
