Even TAG Heuer is doing technical horology as they enter F1 sponsorship. Technical horology is very interesting... but, for me, it has no soul.
Super grand complications are nice, tho be aware of how some brands/types are fragile and service costs / wait times are what they are. i had a grand comp, was fun and all, but you can't do this or that ... and a waterproof rating that brings fear for guys like me who can experience torrential downpours (weather changes, it's a global thing).
Great point dsgalaxy1, some of us desire innovative design, something intersting in complications (not typical Grandfather's watch stuff, which we repsect, but the 1800s and 1900s are long gone), and fun innovations. Christoipher Ward, for example, makes timpeices you must love, it meets many of the things you mention.
dsgalaxy1, what brands/models meet your desire for up-to-date design, interesting and unique complications, plus modern innovations? Love the direction of this discussion, as there are many, many choices we have today versus what good ol' Grand-dad had.
PS: My wife loves the Van Cleef & Arpels offerings, including the pink flowers, the lovers who kiss, and she'd be over the moon with the Midnight Planétarium. Ludovic Ballouard's upside-down numbers that flip is a cool and fun complication of sorts. You make a good point, as today we have many very interesting designs outside of your typical Grandfather's watch. We have many very interesting 'complications' that our grandparents (and even parents) might not have ever had the opportunity to own.
Newly-released Sellita movements could be exactly what many will surely love, little decoration, high reliability, COSC accurate, and easy to get serviced when the time comes.
