"An independent watchmaker must be honestly independent".
I can say that most of the independent watches in IGOTT II give me fresh air and not boring.

We'll have a problem in giving a definition to the word " Independant ".
Since nobody, from the " Independant " to the Manufacture, is really independant:
How many deopend on another Company, for example for the sapphire glass, the strap, the buckle, the hands, the escapement, the whole movement?
Is " Independant "a state of mind?

Nicolas, there is no true sense of independent.
Your example is correct.
At least, the idea must be independent. You are also right to refer to state of mind.
When I said "honestly independent", it means that the watchmaker is obligated to reveal that he is only capable of or responsible in doing certain parts, and the rest of them supplied by the others or modified through the supplied parts. It is an agreed fact that no watchmaker can do produce everypart in his watch.
When there is a saying "you buy the watchmaker", what does it mean? Is it only referred to his talent or because he is very friendly? To me, it is more than that. It also refers to his integrity. Therefore, I said "honestly independent".
