Thanks Dje! I really appreciate you posting the picture of my 5970! I also appreciate Arthur's picture below--further testament to the beauty of this watch.
My first high end watch purchase was a 3970G. Unfortunately, it and I never really connected. For me, it was a little hard to read, the hands (of the third series) left me a little cold, and more than anything, I was slightly annoyed by the depth to diameter ratio. When the 5970 came out, it seemed perfect--in pictures at least.
At first, and by comparison, the 5970 at 39mm seemed large but that feeling was quickly replaced with the feeling it was just right. The depth to diameter is perfect, and the dial just exquisite. I can't say enough about how beautiful I find this watch. I catch myself looking at it all the time (my girlfriend feels she has to compete with my watch...and she's hot, but the 5970? Well...!)
Great watch with a suit, great for casual, works with a evening jacket, and a real heirloom piece.
I think it is an end of an era for Patek Philippe. With the design of the 5970 only three years old, I am curious to see what Patek offers as a replacement, if anything.
This 5970 is gorgeous. Thank you for sharing your comments about 3970 and 5970. It is very interesting for non-owners to know what it is! And probably for some owners who may think the same or not.
As per replacement, I can't imagine that it would not be replaced, so wait and see.
