It’s extremely sensitive. The Chinese guy was advised like a hundred times to keep the watch as secure as possible but he screwed it. Indeed, he would never get a chance to own this piece if not because of COVID-19. Not a money issue at all but this is all I can say. Nothing to do with money laundering either. It’s a very long story. Life goes on!
Chinese buyer?!?
I thought the watch was sold through an European location. Did the Chinese buyer purchase this via phone and shipment delayed or cancelled due to Covid19? I know there are travel restrictions in place for travel between EU and China. Buying a MR and piece unique like this must require in person delivery...is that why this piece ended up on the auction because buyer could not take delivery?
The largest customer base at the Patek salon in Tiffany in NY are Chinese. In fact, most deliveries at Tiffany are shipped to China/HK and never even picked up in store.

Patek has been clamping down on these so called “deliveries”. If the watch is in the realm of a MR then I believe it has to be picked up in person. They will want an in person demonstration of how the watch works and make sure you understand it as well. As for the “regular” references like Calatrava, Annual Calendars, etc. I’m sure most are shipped to buyers if they cannot make an in person pick-up.
Having said that, don’t think this watch 5531 was delivered to buyer unless Patek made an exception which in this case may have due to Covid19. What I’m wondering is what happened to the watch? Was it undeliverable or did the buyer decide not to take delivery and was subsequently sold at auction.

Tough call
It was picked up in person. For this kind of super high end watch, forget about delivery, more or less the one and only watch like this. Unfortunately, something unexpectedly happened. I will not go into details.

Thanks for the update. Hope it’s not health related issues and the buyer is fine. Financial issues can always be “solved”, health then even with all the money in the world cannot buy...
Would love to have the full story ... as this watch is my grail watch and I find it strange that it’s being sold at auction so fast
