Description

All 40-odd (nobody knows the exact number) Voutilainen Observatoires are, in a sense, unique. However, this piece is probably more unique than most, and definitely one of the most significant.

It features a platinum case (one of perhaps six Observatoires in this case metal - my estimate), a salmon dial (one of perhaps two), and a frosted gold movement (one of perhaps three or four). No other Observatoire looks like this one.

Also featured are a tourbillon-style balance bridge and a rare circular "Voutlinainen - Môtiers" movement inscription.

The watch was exhibited by Kari in his booth at Baselworld 2009 and he says he knocked back at least ten offers from potential purchasers, including one or two for on-the-spot cash.

Its unique combination of colours and surface finishes is not to everyone's taste, but most agree it is stunning in real life. Among its admirers are Karl-Friedrich Schöfele, Peter Speake-Marin and the Grönefeld brothers, all of whom have expressed their admiration in person.

I have worn it sparingly, only on very special occasions, and as such, it has retained its as-new appearance and condition. Fitted brown croco strap is around 85% and there is a brand-new black croco strap included also. Both straps feature Kari's quick-release mechanism for rapid strap changing.

Comes with the superb original inlaid presentation box by Cédric Vichard, all papers, and (of course!) the Besançon Observatoire certificate of accuracy.

I have cherished this watch for the past two years, but now it's time for another discerning watch lover to share the privilege and joy of owning one of the most beautiful watches ever made.

The watch is in Shanghai but I am prepared to hand-deliver to HK, Singapore or Australia at my expense.

comment Sorry for spelling M. Scheufele's name incorrectly.

Just to clarify, I am China-based but an Australian citizen. Payment would be to my Australian account.

comment What's the case size? 38 or 41?
tony p Mar 6, 2012
comment Case size is 39mm.

comment Actually it's stated as 38.1mm on the bill of sale. I'm not aware that Kari made any Observatoires in larger cases. This case size perfectly complements the movement diameter.
