Description

SOLD As I am making some adjustments to my collection, I am for the first time offering this superb and rare Jaeger LeCoultre ref. E399 Geomatic. This classic watch is powered by a cal. 881G movement, and was the automatic successor to the widely acclaimed hand-wound JLC Geophysic, which was introduced in 1958. The 881G is a chronometer version of the important cal. 881 movement which was first produced in 1959. The 881 was, in turn, was the predecessor to the fine, modern JLC 889/2 movement. The 881G Geomatics, of which only 1,700 were produced in stainless steel, were manufactured between 1962 and 1968. Here are some further details which help to illustrate the quality of these uncommon vintage movements:

After 360 days of intense test in an Official bureau for Watch Timekeeping Tests, the Geomatic chronometers are awarded their rating certificate with official notation for "Especially good result".

Geomatic Technical Details:

Officially certified chronometer, with engraved back, caliber 881 or 883 (from 1967–74), 19'800 vibrations/h, calendar with instantaneous date change at midnight, direct second-hand, shock protected, antimagnetic, stopping device for to-the-second time setting (hacking), water-resistant

This watch is in excellent condition throughout. The case features elegant lines, and has not been heavily polished (if at all). It has a couple of light scratched on the back which could be easily buffed out if desired. The serial number can be seen clearly, underscoring that the watch has been worn sparingly, and quite possibly never polished. The iconic gold Geomatic badge on the case back is crisp and clean. Please note that there is a slight reddish tinge around the words CHRONOMETRE and GEOMATIC on the case back. I have seen this on other Geomatics, and, while it may be possible to remove this color with some sort of solvent, I have made no effort to do so. This can be seen in the case back photo below.

The dial is in near-mint condition. The only flaw which I can discern is a small, barely noticeable mark below the seven o’clock marker. This very minor issue does not in any way detract from the look of the dial.

The movement is on excellent condition, and I have had no reason to service it during the time that I have owned the watch.

This watch is fully original, including the signed crown, is working well, and would make a spectacular addition to anyone’s collection. It is fitted with a very handsome, padded DeBeers baby croco strap in matte black. The strap is in mint condion, and is fitted with a very solid, generic SS buckle.

I am asking $4,200.00 for the Geomatic, and will include shipping and insurance worldwide at that price. Similar, and even lesser examples (in terms of condition) have been recently advertised at vintage dealers for several hundred dollars more than my asking price.

I am well-known on The Purists (and TZ), have an impeccable record of positive sales, and have plenty of references. Feel free to ask any questions!
