Piaget

Novice Piaget Collector

Hey All:
Firstly, I'd like to say that I've been a watch enthusiast for some time but am now serious about starting a vintage collection. Years ago, in High School, I bought a 1950s Longines Grand Prize 10Kt gold-filled automatic for $30.00 from a watchmaker in St. Louis. His accent suggested to me that he was eastern european and learned his trade via the master-apprentice tradition. Anyway, I asked him what watch company he believed produced the finest watches. His answer was "Piaget." What? Not "Rolex?" Not "Patek Philippe?" His answer was Piaget.
If you look at a watch in it's entirety, you'd have to agree. Piaget's commitment to technical and ARTISTIC excellence is why, to put it simply, they are the complete package. I've got some questions for the forum. How much does a factory service run generally for a vintage watch? I paid $550 for factory Rolex service which I thought was very reasonable. When did Piaget launch their Tanagra line? Why do vintage Piaget's not seem to command the high prices of their haute horologerie counterparts? Thanks to everyone in advance for your help in starting my new collection!
