A. Lange & Söhne

Antique Lange Question

Thought I'd post this again with some additional information:

I recently acquired an antique A.Lange pocket watch. I contacted Lange in Germany and they indicated that the watch dates from the 1870s. It is 1A quality (diamond capstone, blued overcoil, chatons) and about 55mm and runs well. It is engraved "A. Lange Dresden." Amazingly, the dial is perfect and is not a refinish. Here is the oddity, the watch is re-cased....but not one of the re-casings that we have been seeing lately coming from Eastern Europe. This is a somewhat worn curved nickle 3 piece case with small hinged lugs on either side that would fit an 18mm strap. The top and bottom parts of the case have an outcropped area to open the case with a case knife. The top and bottom of the case are hinged. The crown and pin-set are original. It almost looks as if someone recased it to be a pilots watch to be worn over a flight jacket. If anyone has any thoughts about this watch, I'd really be interested to know them. I'm considering having it recased, but if this case is somehow historically significant, then I will not recase it. Thanks!
