Christianch, a discerning collector, seeks the community's expertise in a pivotal decision between two avant-garde timepieces: the Urwerk UR-100V LightSpeed and the UR-100V UltraViolet. This discussion highlights the nuances that differentiate these horological marvels, offering valuable insights for anyone considering an independent watchmaker's unique creations. The thread explores how subtle design elements and material choices impact wearability and personal expression.

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all preparing for a wonderful New Year!🥳 I find myself in a tricky situation and would appreciate your advice on a difficult decision: choosing between the UR-100V LightSpeed and the UR-100V UltraViolet.

In the photos, you will see a wrist shot of me wearing the LightSpeed (I haven't had the chance to try on the UltraViolet yet, but I've included a wrist shot of it—credit: about-timepieces.com). Both watches are excellent, but they have some differences:

LightSpeed:

- Covers the other hour wheels, which I find fantastic.

- Larger at 43mm compared to 41mm (the size suits me well).

- Case material is carbon, whereas the UltraViolet is titanium.

- Higher water resistance (50m versus 30m).

UltraViolet:

- The violet titanium case is striking—bold and distinctive.

- Smaller size makes it potentially more versatile for daily wear (though the colour scheme might be challenging for everyday use).

- More affordable, which is certainly an advantage.

I admire aspects of both watches. The design and features of the LightSpeed are impressive, but the UltraViolet has a unique character that is difficult to overlook. I suspect the LightSpeed might be somewhat more exclusive.

If you were in my position, which would you choose? I would be grateful for your thoughts, and I wish you all a fantastic New Year!

Best regards,

Christian

About the Urwerk UR-Satellite Ref. UR-100V

The UR-100V UltraViolet is a distinctive variant within Urwerk's UR-100V series, known for its satellite hour display system. This particular reference stands out due to its vibrant violet titanium case, which provides a bold aesthetic departure from more subdued material options often found in the line. It maintains the core design principles of the UR-100V, focusing on innovative time-telling and a contemporary form factor. The model emphasizes material and color as key elements of its identity.

The watch features a violet titanium case, precisely finished to highlight its unique color and texture. Powering the UR-100V UltraViolet is the self-winding caliber UR 12.02, which offers a power reserve of 48 hours. The case dimensions are 41mm in width, 49.7mm in length, and 14mm in thickness. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, ensuring clarity and durability. The movement's architecture is visible through an exhibition case back, revealing the intricate mechanics of the satellite display.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking a visually striking and technically advanced timepiece. Its limited production and specific colorway contribute to its desirability among enthusiasts of independent watchmaking. The UltraViolet variant reinforces Urwerk's commitment to exploring unconventional materials and finishes, positioning it as a notable piece within the brand's contemporary offerings and a conversation starter for those appreciative of avant-garde horology.

I tried that one on a few months ago and was super impressed. The purple and white look great, a unique but still wearable combo. And it’s super comfortable. I guess the Lightspeed shows you literal light speeds, but I feel like that’s about as useful as the rotation distance on the Ultraviolet 😄 But honestly, you can’t go wrong either way! Happy new year!

I think that both would look less bold with different straps, though we all know that these watches are just toys the the masses 😎 (which is a plus nowadays). I didn't try these ones at the last Milano watch week but I'd be curious to look at the violet with real light. The light speed is more classic in terms of materials, that's why I'd go for the ultraviolet (with a dark strap, too).🤩🤩 Anyway whatever you choose you have my respect, much better than the Hublot 👍

Pure emotional "decision". I saw the pictures and my reactions were "intriguing" in one case and "WOW!!" in the other. I'll let you guess which is one and which is the other.

Would go with the Ultraviolet, likely with a different strap.

another interesting point is that, on the lightspeed, the other hours wheels are hidden may be making it more "readable" ?
