Jay (Eire) shares a personal reflection on his recent acquisition, the Timex IRONMAN 8-Lap Hodinkee edition, a quartz watch that marks a departure from his long-standing preference for mechanical timepieces. His post delves into the unexpected appeal of this digital watch, highlighting its design and functionality. This article explores why a seasoned collector might find joy in a watch that challenges traditional horological norms.
Something rather different today. Not a Texas Timex (hence the subject line reference above for those that didn’t connect), just a Timex.
Quartz, yes, this has been a soft spot for me of late having sworn off such battery powered technology for many years I’ve found myself knee deep in Swatch of late.
And now another one (quartz). This time not a Swatch but a Timex IRONMAN 8-Lap.
Specifically a Hodinkee edition, the colourway really caught my eye. It’s clean, fresh even. The transparent case adds a bit of a contemporary feel to what is a retro design / watch. This design dates to 1986, 40 years. It has endured, to my eye at least.
Also being a sporty person, and an Ironman (a past life from which I’ve moved on!), the specific watch also appealed. And for those that know, I guess the inside joke is this is better than the tattoo!!!
As with many Quartz watches this watch does a lot of things; chronograph, countdown timer, alarm, calendar, plus it has 100 meters of water resistance. GADA watch for sure.
And most importantly, I think it’s actually cool too (the colourway, and the comfortable size).

Here's my 30yr old model still going stroing!
This one has great legibility.
I think it was similar colours to yours. Very cool you still have this.
What is that Casio reference?
In my late teens and early twenties I always had one on to time my runs and swim laps. I wore glasses back then so I couldn’t see the pace clock when training in the pool with them off so I needed the watch with me in the pool. I was also poor back then and I recall them being very inexpensive. Great workout watch 👌😊
And a few batteries along the way. I almost bought another one when the metal limited edition came out. BTW nice denim jacket!
