After a pretty long hunt, and after the recent lucky find & switch to a NOS 115-Plexi..

Now happiness !

Ever since I had been exposed to Nico's superb 6542, and witnessed in part Joe's "preliminaria" to find one some time ago,
- I had been on the lookout for this Reference, no rush but alert..

So I started to observe, look at those of my patient friends, checking details & receiving encouragement.
- Listen , Look and Learn became the little mantra & gameplan..

Seen some, many in conditions, not what I would have thought desirable.

Then a number of months ago, I had finally located one, via my trusted watchdealer, (dating from IV 58), indicated by engraving and the plausible & matching range of serial number.

Was in a real good shape, few little "rough" flaws between 7 & 9 on the original bakelite, just about to be seen with the naked eye.
Also has the nice alternating Roulette Date, but not the very original crowns with the cross.. - I will pretty easily live with that., for the moment at least.

A very nice case, not overpolished, and to me summing up to a firing appeal..

I was allowed to get some pics, even wearing her for a few days.
- had been really mesmerized and got pretty hooked, somehow lost...
wink

Then, after advice & helpful consultations with very good & expert friends, the attractiveness & authenticity looked promising & soon were confirmed.

Well, it took me several months to sum up the necessary funds, but that was already a sort of psychological test, to fulfillment..
wink

There was one (little ?) detail, which needed to be done, that was to find an NOS correct Plexi, including the cyclops, as the one she came with was one without the "loupe"..

I again was very lucky to find an immaculate one, on one of my recent little trips, from a wonderful watchdealer & -maker's store..

I guess, I 'll stop here, but now as I got her back from a light service and the Plexi change, I thought to just share this early "Trio Collage", illustrating my happiness and showing this recent acquisition.

Without further ado, my friends:- here one of my recent arrivals:

An all-time Rolex Classic: Master GMT 6542

Just for completion:

Before Plexi no cyclops change

All set !!

Hope, these dwellings were not too long,
Have to confess, I'm really very happy with that find !

Cheers & Best,

About the Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 6542

The GMT Master reference 6542 was introduced in 1955 as a specialized tool watch for pilots. It is notable for its dual time zone complication, achieved through a rotating 24-hour bezel and an independently adjustable 24-hour hand. This reference marks the initial iteration of the GMT Master line, establishing the core functionality and aesthetic that would define subsequent models. Its development addressed the need for a watch capable of displaying multiple time zones simultaneously, a requirement that emerged with the advent of intercontinental air travel.

The 6542 features a 38mm stainless steel case, housing the automatic caliber 1036. This movement provides a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. The watch is fitted with an acrylic crystal and offers a water resistance of 50 meters. Early examples of the 6542 are distinguished by a Bakelite bezel insert, which was later replaced by an aluminum insert due to durability concerns. The dial is typically black, often featuring gilt printing on early examples.

This reference holds significance for collectors as the foundational model of the GMT Master series. Its distinct characteristics, particularly the early Bakelite bezels and specific dial configurations, are key points of interest. The 6542 represents the original design intent for a pilot's GMT watch, making it a reference point for understanding the evolution of the model line. Variants exist with different bezel materials and dial details, contributing to its collectibility.

Thx kindly, CC !.. For your kind looking & nice words !.. :))

And often it\'s also the stories, which intensify our bonding to our tic-tacs ! This one almost always makes me smile, when looking at her ) Secondly, you are absolutely right, that the Vintage magic also is related to history, DNA, of coyrse condition of the piece, - & equally to what we feel inside, when we reflect about the tides of time.. Thx again for your encouragement, my friend ! Very Best, hs

In all simplicity, a holy monster you found, here.

The mother of all the Rolex GMT Master, with a nice dial, and maybe an insert you could try to improve, but which, at least, authentic. Very nice specimen, which deserved to be magnified by a new plexy, and a 115! Huge congratulations, for both the watch and the plexy. I need to find an inner ring ( which maintains the plexy ) to change mine, alas... Enjoy! Best, Nicolas
