My fascination for this reference is well known, maybe was kown as my Watch, due to the faxt that I posted and will post many other and new pictures of it.

But I developped another fascination - obsession? - which leads me to collect all the pictures I can take of 6542s.

It is a less expensive Madness, and a very pleasurable one, I must say.

Here, I fell on this 6542 from IV 1956, in the 212 xxx range.

A very nice dial and bakelite insert, even if it is broken ( and repaired ) somewhere between 22 and 23 hours, as you can see.

The case is in great shape, with its bevels.

Cherry on the cake, and it is quite rare to be mentionned, a nice leather strap, which quite almost matches with the red zone of the bakelite bezel.

I would be his owner, I would dig deeper in the Madness, and go for a red strap for the part above 12, and a blue strap for the part below 6 o clock, for the fun of it.

Here the pictures of the Beauty:

A last detail, the Rolex buckle:

Ok, I would still prefer the rivetted bracelet, but from time to time, it would be fun and pleasant to wear it on such a strap combo.

Isn't it marvellous?

The fact that it is now the property of my good friend Joe adds some extra weight to the marvellous, I must say.

It had to happen!  wink

Best,

Nicolas

About the Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 6542

The GMT Master reference 6542 was introduced in 1955 as a specialized tool watch for pilots. It is notable for its dual time zone complication, achieved through a rotating 24-hour bezel and an independently adjustable 24-hour hand. This reference marks the initial iteration of the GMT Master line, establishing the core functionality and aesthetic that would define subsequent models. Its development addressed the need for a watch capable of displaying multiple time zones simultaneously, a requirement that emerged with the advent of intercontinental air travel.

The 6542 features a 38mm stainless steel case, housing the automatic caliber 1036. This movement provides a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. The watch is fitted with an acrylic crystal and offers a water resistance of 50 meters. Early examples of the 6542 are distinguished by a Bakelite bezel insert, which was later replaced by an aluminum insert due to durability concerns. The dial is typically black, often featuring gilt printing on early examples.

This reference holds significance for collectors as the foundational model of the GMT Master series. Its distinct characteristics, particularly the early Bakelite bezels and specific dial configurations, are key points of interest. The 6542 represents the original design intent for a pilot's GMT watch, making it a reference point for understanding the evolution of the model line. Variants exist with different bezel materials and dial details, contributing to its collectibility.

A nice Rolex rivet big logo is a solid choice.

The red bracelet is for fun in the sun. I need to dig into to see if I can find a good match for Joe with a nice big logo bracelet. Bill PS Please excuse my back side - the 6542 back case view that is.

For the fun, I found even better, but the strap is still on work...

Agreed that a Bracelet with a big logo is a must, on a 6542. Ciao, Bill. Nicolas.

- pieces like this are totally seductive !.. I guess, it's either you run , OR you let the forces do their spell on you ! - Into definitive surrender !.. Great pics, Nico, making me remember so well, - Happy, that it went to our good friend Joe.. Finally, I foresee, that we'll probably soon see something more of it, by its lucky & happy owner ! Thx again, for this magnificent share !>br> - Pure pleasure to look at .. Best, hs

Well, this is just my conviction, but I feel a few Vintage Rolex can beat a 6542.

In terms of appeal and sensuality. I only see a Rolex Big Crown ( or Tudor ) being able to rivalize. This one is a very fine example yes. It is great that we were all able to see it in the flesh! Best, Nicolas
