Subexplorer shares his excitement over acquiring a 1995 Zenith Daytona, marking his final watch purchase of 2013. This post highlights the unique appeal of the black dial with brownish subdial rings, often referred to as a 'Patrizzi' dial, and delves into the meticulous process of restoring its condition. The discussion explores the enduring charm of this specific Daytona reference compared to both vintage and modern iterations.

The Daytona reference 116520 represents a significant evolution within the Cosmograph Daytona line, being the first to feature Rolex's in-house developed chronograph movement. This reference marked a departure from previous models that utilized outsourced calibers, establishing a new benchmark for the brand's commitment to vertical integration and precision engineering in its sports watch offerings. It maintained the classic Daytona aesthetic while introducing subtle refinements.
The watch is presented in a 40mm Oystersteel case, featuring a fixed tachymeter bezel also crafted from Oystersteel. Powering the timepiece is the automatic Caliber 4130, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement known for its robust construction and a substantial power reserve of 72 hours. A scratch-resistant sapphire crystal protects the dial, and the watch is water-resistant to a depth of 100 meters, ensuring durability and functionality.
Appealing to collectors interested in the technical advancements of Rolex, the 116520 is recognized for its role in the brand's history of movement development. It is available with either a white or black dial, both featuring contrasting sub-dials that enhance legibility and visual interest. The reference was produced for a considerable period, making it a recognizable and sought-after model for those appreciating the blend of traditional design with modern horological innovation.
This is a nice way to end the year and start the new one. Out with a bang. Wear it in good health. Bill
That is a super nice and cool Daytona, so called Patrizzi. Its brownish colour contrasting the black dial is simply fantastic. I find "new" Daytonas like yours very attractive. Some months ago I was close to get one exactly like your new one. What a nice way to end the year, a sort of self present for Christmas! Enjoy it in good health! Un afectuoso saludo porteño!
The only point I disagree with you is about the charm of this 16520. I find this reference having more charm than the vintage, I mean, the manual winding Daytos. On the other points, I totally concur. I am hunting one, too, to make the pair with my white dialed 16520. Congratulations, Amigo! Un abrazo. Nicolas
..have a good & joyful Festive Season ! With Congrats , :) my best, hs
the best looking modern Daytona IMHO.
... Yes, I´m very happy with my new Patrizzi dial Daytona. I´m glad you like it! It makes for a nice present to put under the tree this year! I feel we owe ourselves a meeting some day next year, being so close here. May be in 2014 we can arrange something, at least taking a "cafecito" together and a little chat about our common passion! Un abrazo! And have a nice holidays and New Year! Kind regards, Abel.
