Rolex's Cellini Moonphase, a distinctive departure from the brand's sports watch dominance, continues to spark debate among collectors. Author 'singingbee' revisits this unique reference, initially finding it too thick but now appreciating its aesthetic. This article delves into the community's nuanced perspectives on its design, perceived 'un-Rolex' identity, and horological significance.

The last time I saw this watch in the metal was back in 2017 when it was just launched. I recalled I didn’t find it very attractive as I find the watch abit too thick and chunky as a dress watch.

I recently saw it on display at my local AD and I find the dial, fluted bezel and meteorite moonphase quite nice. The whole package in a 39mm Everose gold case looks very appealing to me although I still have my reservation on the thickness, 13+mm if I remember correctly. I feel the thickness here detracts from the overall elegance of this beautiful piece.

The AD also told me the moonphase is the only model remaining in the Cellini family as the other models have been discontinued.

But it was not available in Sydney, and so I passed on it. Recalled calling up every single AD to ask if they had one. Many months after I saw one sitting in the store and asked to see it (wallet empty). It was a painful moment.

It is quite a unique piece in many aspects. The case sides are curved, like a milgauss case, almost pebble-like. The fluting of the bezel and also the caseback is a nice feature too. And not to mention, the moonphase is one of the more beautiful moons out there. Only gripe is the seconds hand which I wished were longer, because the hallmark of precision (for reading the seconds) is to have the seconds hand almost touching the periphery. Is it sporty or dressy. I would think it is both, much like

I think it's a beautiful and distinctive piece, although I also believe it has been unfairly slighted out there - perhaps because it's misunderstood, I wonder? For example, some people will say it's "un-Rolex", seemingly claiming that Rolex should stick to making durable sports watches. And I can certainly appreciate this point of view. However, I think this piece brings all the good that Rolex stands for in a deliberately sporty yet timeless package, with robustness and substance, excellent tim

I almost pulled the trigger on one a few years ago. It wears very well and has a very nice presence on the wrist.

...and the thickness would bother me on an otherwise elegant watch...

I would second your opinion if the dial would - as most dials do - have a second/minute track on the outside rim. However, here is the calendar, and the tip of the second hand would only add a confusing element to it. Therefore, the minute/second track has been relocated toward the inner dial, and the second hand permits an exact reading on that, so it is long enough IMHO. Marcus
