CH Gruyère's acquisition of the Rolex Deepsea 126660 'Deep Blue' is more than just a watch story; it's a testament to the unexpected journeys luxury timepieces can take within our lives. His narrative highlights how watches often become imbued with sentimental value, far beyond their horological significance.

The Rolex Submariner reference 16803 represents a significant evolution within the Submariner line, marking the introduction of sapphire crystal and a quick-set date function to the two-tone configuration. This reference bridges the gap between earlier plexiglass models and later iterations, offering enhanced durability and convenience while retaining the classic Submariner aesthetic. It was produced during a period of transition for the model, incorporating modern advancements into its robust design.
This reference features a 40mm Oyster case crafted from a combination of stainless steel and 18k yellow gold, providing a distinctive two-tone appearance. It is powered by the automatic caliber 3035, a movement known for its reliability and the inclusion of a quick-set date complication. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal, offering improved scratch resistance, and has a water resistance rating of 300 meters. The unidirectional rotating bezel is made of 18k yellow gold with an aluminum insert.
Appealing to collectors interested in transitional Rolex references, the 16803 offers a blend of vintage charm and modern utility. Its two-tone construction provides a dressier alternative to the all-steel Submariner, making it versatile for various occasions. Variants typically include black or blue dial options, paired with matching bezel inserts, allowing for personal preference within its established design.
It is a bit thick and it will occasionally get in the way but that's a small price to pay
Not as comfy as a 40mm but certainly not as bad as I thought it would be. Very obvious that it is purpose built. Funny thing is, I have holes in my eardrums and don’t even go swimming.
Touching story, cheers to family and best wishes.
I call them the “bonus daughters.”
The Deepsea is my fav watch, and I have 200+!. Few days on the wrist and you'll feel it has been there forever, comfy too. And the Cameron dial, just a pleasure to look at.
Take a flight, come visit for a weekend, I'll give you mine to take home and wear for few weeks. you'll be completely convinced. (Not selling my friend, just lending ) .
