Mark in Paris introduces the Richard Mille RM35-02 Rafael Nadal in Red Quartz-TPT, a significant evolution within the RM035 family. This post delves into the technical advancements and design choices that define this new model, particularly its automatic movement and use of innovative materials. Readers gain insight into how Richard Mille continues to push boundaries in high-performance watchmaking, especially for extreme sporting contexts.

Richard Mille has just unveiled a new model version in the RM035 family, right on time for the Parisian Rolland Garros tournament: The RM035-02 Rafael Nadal in Red Quartz-TPT.

The last RM035-01 (picture below) was introduced a few years back in the new NTPT Carbon case. This new material is very light and rugged and made of carbon fiber layers (used in competition sailboat mast construction for instance).

This material was also taken as a base for the Quartz-TPT case used for the first time in last year's RM027-02 Rafael Nadal (see picture below) that the tennis player uses during his matches.

Originally, the RM035 (made of Magnesium and Aluminum alloy) has always been a more affordable derived version of the RM027, with a less complicated movement (no Tourbillon) but still with the shock-proof incredible resistance (tested up to a 5000 G acceleration).

When dealing with sizes, while the first RM035 was 48x39.7x12.25 mm, thus the small case size in the Richard Mille collection, the RM035-01 was nearer to the bigger size from the brand i.e. 49.9x42x14mm.

Today the new RM035-02 remains in the same range as the NTPT model with a 49.9x44.5x13.1mm, though a little larger.

Like the RM027-02, this new version emphasizes the link to the sport filed as it is provided with the Kevlar strap.

However, the movement of the RM035 (based on a Vaucher gear train) had always been manually wound. Today, as it was a request of many RM clients, the new RM035-02 is Automatic!

You'll tell me what your think about this choice. I loved the manual wounding feature (with sliding flange, what not many Manual calibers have) but I have a very soft spot for RM's adjustable rotor and the fact that a watch is Automatic.

The Red color should look very different "live" and is still an interesting choice for a sporty watch even if it remains a bold choice. I wouldn't judge from the press-kit's processed picture to guess how it really looks like and will wait to see it in the "metal". It will come with the standard NTPT case as well.

Anyway, RM has proven to master the craftmaship of these very hard to deal with material and here is another example from the Red TPT Quartz RM011.

Cheers, Mark

About the Richard Mille Flyback Chronograph Felipe Massa Ref. RM011

The Richard Mille RM011 Flyback Chronograph Felipe Massa represents the brand's RM 011 series, distinguished by its flyback chronograph functionality within a 40mm case format. This reference was produced from 2007 to 2020, establishing it as a multi-year production model within Richard Mille's contemporary lineup.

Also the colour is loud enough to continue to get the attention of the commentators!

I didn't make the link with Rafael's citizenship as it uses the RM011 Red Quartz TPT unveiled earlier. Cheers, Mark

and the post quite naturally came discussing about a RM027 as the Rolland Garros Grand Slam is held at the same time. I thought at the time it had been only one year since the RM027-02 was launched so a little too soon to get a new model. It seems that the "Nadal" was indeed a RM035 (as you suggest in the other post Graham ). Cheers, Mark

I'm not convinced the rotor (even with it's adjustable nature) can withstand the shock. Every automatic I have worn playing tennis eventually gets damaged. Does anybody know if RM claims it can withstand the shock? I can't find it on the official site and only 3rd party sites are making the claim. Will be interesting if Nadal will be wearing it this week in Paris..

but I dont know why they changed the case size. the 35-02 tapers more but is thinner I like the chunky case of the 35-01 35-01 top, 35-02 bottom

But I don't think Nadal will use this one. I imagine he will keep his RM027-02 instead.
