cazalea embarks on an ambitious project to create a definitive catalog of regulator dial watches, driven by his long-standing interest and ownership of several examples. This introductory post defines what constitutes a regulator watch and invites the community to contribute to identifying and documenting the vast array of dial layouts and complications. His detailed graphics and systematic approach aim to demystify this unique horological display.

Hello Gents,

I have long been interested in watches outfitted with regulator dials. I've owned a Chronoswiss Regulator, Goldpfeil Moon Regulator, Oris Regulator Diver, and others. So here is a list of fine Swiss, German and (?) other regulator wristwatches.  I thought it might be interesting to catalog some of the dial layout variations. Of course, this was a naive intention. I did not suspect that I'd find so many... and that I would create so many dial layouts. I admit this has become an obsession!

I define a regulator as a watch in which the seconds minutes , and hours hands are each on separate shafts. However, as you will see as you scroll down, there are a number ways to interpret this theme, display these features and other complications.

For convenience, at this point I am NOT covering square or tonneau shaped cases, or oddball hands that traverse oblong circuits or watches with balls to indicate the time.

Perhaps together we can make this THE DEFINITIVE CATALOG OF REGULATOR WATCH CONFIGURATIONS.

Here for your viewing pleasure are 40+ Regulators that I (with PuristS helping) have found.

PLEASE HELP IDENTIFY THE UNLABELED MOVEMENTS

A few days ago, I knew which watches I used as my model. Now I have lost track. As a test of your knowledge, please help me with brand and model name for each unlabeled image.

Note that the graphics were my creation, and do not attempt to replicate Tourbillons, engravings, open barrels, inset diamonds or other non-display features. If I didn't put AUF AUB in the correct language or location, please forgive me. I have no intention to deceive. The details of fonts and so forth are not significant, but the locations of features are intended to represent the watch faithfully. My drawing skills are limited though... :-(

Please submit your numbered suggestions as responses below this post. I will enter them as each watch gets identified. Expressions of amazement or expletives are also welcome.

Cheers,

Cazalea

As you might have noticed by now, when I started I just put "regulator watch" into Google, got a list of images, and worked my way through them in order picking out examples that were clear enough so I could re-create them in my Adobe Illustrator software. Since then I have been paying a heavy price for not doing it more systematically, or keeping track of the models I created. But who would have imagined 48 examples! and there are some more from funky Russian or Chinese makers, but I have not p

I really like regulator watches ( and what watches I don't like? ;)) but I have only Dornbluth Regulator.

Hi all, Just so no one is disappointed, this file does not contain the names of the many models that might use each configuration. What it DOES contain are all the graphics, sorted by the position of the hour indication. As you can see below, the hours are at the top or 12 or 0 (zero in my nomenclature; for easier sorting). Eventually they move around to 1, 2, 3, etc and finally to center hours. Enjoy the viewing - I am going to take a break! CLICK on any image to enlarge it (subject to your bro
