Yesterday I wanted to do something I hadn’t done in quite a while: check my perpetual calendars. Especially since I had the Blancpain new acquisition in January.

The basic idea was this: although I bought the BP „new and unworn“, it had already been sitting around for a few years. So I wanted to make sure everything was truly working perfectly. And of course, to compare it with my other perpetuals.

I had it all nicely planned. I would sit down comfortably at 11:45 pm, line up the watches in front of me, and film the date transitions. In perfect light conditions. Relaxed.

Well… things turned out a bit differently. We had been out with friends and only got home at around 11:58 pm. So I improvised a rather “hectic” last-minute operation to document the switch from February 28th to March 1st. I was juggling several watches at once, using two iPhones at the same time. The lighting conditions were, let’s say, suboptimal.

A slightly crazy action. But perhaps interesting for you nonetheless.

My observations (calendar transition from Feb 28 to March 1):

1.
IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Eternity: everything instant (in the 1. second after midnight). Unfortunately, I couldn’t use the first photo because it was so poor (my hands were trembling because I had always dropped its smaller sibling at midnight 😆). So this one was taken 42 seconds later.

2.
IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar: everything instant (in the 2. second after midnight)

This is the poorest photo because I almost dropped the watch… 🙏
Photo taken also a few seconds later because I was still in shock.

3.
H. Moser & Cie. Perpetual Calendar Purity: everything instant (in the first second after midnight)

Here the photo was „in time“ because my better half helped me.

4.
Blancpain Villeret Quantième Perpétuel 8 Jours: just as romantic as the watch itself looks – leisurely, in small steps ☺️

With this watch, I could truly relax. 😆

00:06 – date changes to 31; slight movement already visible in the weekday and month

00:21 – month switches to March; date jumps to the 1st, weekday has moved a bit further

00:35 – weekday indicates Sunday, but lazily since the hand is not yet perfectly centered

01:01 – now everything is perfectly aligned

A little madness. I know.

And a catastrophic photo quality, but perhaps some of you still enjoyed this tiny journey. ☺️🙏

Have a wonderful Sunday, my dear watch friends.

Thomas

About the IWC Perpetual Calendar Ref. IW502307

IWC's Portuguese Perpetual Calendar represents the culmination of the Schaffhausen manufacture's calendar complications, tracing its lineage to the brand's foundational expertise in precision timekeeping. The Portuguese collection itself emerged from IWC's pocket watch heritage, adapting large-format movements to wristwatch cases. This perpetual calendar variant demonstrates IWC's commitment to accessible haute horlogerie, offering one of the most legible and user-friendly perpetual calendars in contemporary watchmaking.

The technical architecture centers on IWC's in-house perpetual calendar module, displaying day, date, month, year, and moon phases across a carefully balanced dial layout. The eternal calendar tracks leap years through 2100, requiring no manual correction during that period. The guilloche-textured subsidiary dials create visual hierarchy while maintaining exceptional legibility - a hallmark of IWC's design philosophy that prioritizes function alongside form. The substantial case proportions accommodate the complex movement while preserving the Portuguese collection's distinctive aesthetic DNA.

Within the luxury perpetual calendar segment, IWC occupies a unique position between accessible Swiss manufacture pieces and ultra-high-end complications. The Portuguese Perpetual Calendar commands respect among collectors for its robust construction and practical daily wear capability, unusual for such complex timepieces. Market appreciation remains steady, supported by IWC's consistent production quality and the model's reputation for reliability in extended use scenarios.

Yes, we enjoy this journey very much, Thomas!

Thanks for sharing. Both the instantaneous and the romantic way have their charm, imo. Best, Emmanuel

The IWCs

and the Moser (!) were as fast as a whirlwind. And I’ve actually never had any issues with the IWCs. I think it’s simply a matter of luck. There are always “Monday watches” everywhere.

Thanks for sharing!

Informative and fun. The fact your better half is not only willing to put up with your hobby but also help you take pictures at midnight is a strong statement! ;-)

Now I actually find it quite funny. Now. Not in the night.

That night I felt like a juggler whose balls were all about to hit the floor at the same time. Luckily, I had the IWC Eternity (the most expensive piece) safely on my wrist. 😁🙏 I put her on the wrist just a few seconds before taking all the photos. That’s why it’s sitting a bit carelessly on my wrist.

Thanks for this enlightening journey 👏🏻👍🏻🙏🏻

The photo quality doesn’t matter nearly as much as the story and the differences between watches 😊👍🏻 Wish watch magazines and ‘professional writers’ did more comparisons like this 😊🤷🏻‍♂️ Thanks again 👍🏻🙏🏻
