In this insightful piece, patekova, a seasoned collector, challenges his long-standing preference for white metals in luxury watches. He delves into specific Patek Philippe references, the 3448J and 5970J, to illustrate how certain yellow gold configurations have not only won him over but have become cherished exceptions in his collection. His exploration prompts the community to reflect on their own evolving tastes in watch metals.

Over decades of collecting, for sport type watches, I generally prefer a white metal. Specifically, steel. For dress watches, usually my first choice is also a white metal. Specifically, platinum or for a close second, rose gold. For me steel just makes a lot of sense and has a lot of under the radar aesthetic appeal for sport watches. Platinum is well…. platinum. And I must admit there is just something about its weight, exclusivity and perhaps durability that I find extremely appealing. Rose to me is simply beautiful and if I want a colored metal rose is generally my favorite. Also certainly in terms of older watches, rose is much less common than yellow gold. As for white gold, although there are exceptions based on the model, if I am buying a gold watch I would like it to look like gold. And if I want a white metal I much prefer steel or platinum. This presupposes, all other things being equal and actually having a choice of metals.

But then there are exceptions.

As for 3448, while I actually prefer white gold by far, the price is way too prohibitive. I am thrilled owning a YG 3448.

As for 5970 the yellow is extremely appealing. Yellow gold is not only  regarded as the rarest of the 4 metals, with the white dial, I find it to be the most vintage looking and exceptionally attractive..

Also, in calendar watches, a YG case matches the yellow moon and stars, whereas rose does not. I have come to appreciate this aspect a lot.

So for me the pairing of 3448J and 5970J is extremely appealing. Never before today have I pictured them together - a perfect pair and an extreme delight to own.

Also, perhaps my appreciation of and attraction to YG is growing.

Wondering, what metals are you most attracted to in your watch collecting?

Best, Patekova

About the Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Ref. 3448

The Patek Philippe Reference 3448 is notable as the brand's first self-winding perpetual calendar wristwatch. Introduced in 1962, it marked a significant technical advancement for Patek Philippe, combining the convenience of an automatic movement with the intricate perpetual calendar complication. This reference established a new standard for complicated wristwatches and laid the groundwork for subsequent automatic perpetual calendar models. It was produced for over two decades, demonstrating its enduring appeal and technical success.

The watch features an 18k yellow gold case with a diameter of 37.5 mm, housing the automatic caliber 27-460 Q. This movement provides a power reserve of approximately 40 hours. The dial is champagne in color, protected by a sapphire crystal, and the watch offers a water resistance of 30 meters. The bezel is polished, complementing the overall classic design of the timepiece.

Reference 3448 is highly regarded by collectors for its historical significance as Patek Philippe's inaugural automatic perpetual calendar. It appeals to those who appreciate the blend of traditional watchmaking with technical innovation. The model was primarily produced in yellow gold, with very few examples in white gold, rose gold, or platinum, making those variants particularly rare. Its production run concluded in 1985, solidifying its place as a key reference in the history of complicated Patek Philippe wristwatches.

To the point that if I was the owner and was able to replace one of them or both for white metal examples, I wouldn’t want to do it. I would keep it exactly as is. Because of its warmth, I’m generally attracted to rose gold. But sometimes, yellow gold just looks better: I don’t think there is a universal rule here. I like platinum on certain timepieces like the 5098, but I don’t prefer it systematically. Like you, steel seems to me to be the best option for a sports watch. And white gold is the

Especially if they are something like a Patek, where they are classically styled.

I'd probably argue that these watches in white, stainless, would take on a different (maybe equal but different) character. Personally I've always argued that if I'm going to buy a gold watch it's got to be yellow/rose gold. For me ( I know, what a bumpkin) if I was going to go with white or platinum why pay the money and just buy it in stainless. Although lots of watches aren't available in stainless. I'm gonna duck and cover now. lol

I used to have a YG Lange for 20 years but sold it some years ago as I wasn't wearing it anymore. Nowadays it is RG, Plat or steel - but your pictures especially of that wonderful 5970 make me rethink the YG again. Thank you so much!

I’d be happy to them myself 😁. I like a mix of both yellow and white metal watches. Congratulations on owning such a pair.
