In a captivating post, holdemchamp1225 shares the acquisition of a vintage Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 3700/1A, a timepiece that transcends the current market frenzy. His detailed account highlights the unique appeal of early Nautilus references, particularly their wearability and historical movement. This article delves into why a full-set, single-owner vintage piece like this holds such significant value for collectors.
Not to pile onto the Nautilus FRENZY we are currently going through at the moment due to the Green and now Tiffany's 5711.
I just want to share this special piece that I received recently from a collector friend of many years who has trusted me with such a beauty. Delving into the vintage space can be tricky at times but when one finds a piece from the original owner in an uber full set with 100% provenance, there is nothing more to do than to just accept the kind gesture and make sure it remains within the collector community ππ
Such is the case with this one. It is unmolested (untouched) since it's original purchase. There are minor scratches, etc...but all in all it is in amazing condition so I am so happy to be able to give her the Justin treatment and beat her up a beat LOL πππ
I have to say, the original 3700 series wears so much better than the 5711 series or even the 3710/1A I have. The solid case base makes it thinner than the sapphire caseback of the 5711. It is most likely even thinner or around the same thinness as a 5712/1A.
The JLC base 920 caliber used in this piece as well as the AP 5402 is just very special. Patek departed from this movement early on but AP continued to use it in their 15202 and Perpetual models even up until this year.
Now for Bill, you know what the choice has to be my friend ππ
I know Nico took some nice photos of this during our GTG this weekend so I will wait until he posts them as I am sure they will be better quatily than these quick and dirty ones I took with my phone π€·ββοΈ

About the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Ref. 5402
The Royal Oak reference 5402 is recognized as the original iteration of the model, introduced in 1972. This reference established the design language that would define the Royal Oak collection, characterized by its integrated bracelet and octagonal bezel secured by visible screws. It was initially presented as a luxury sport watch, distinguishing itself through its material and finishing in a period dominated by more traditional dress watch aesthetics. The 5402 was produced in various series, with the A-series being the earliest and most sought after by collectors.
The watch features a 39mm stainless steel case, often referred to as the "Jumbo" size, which was considered substantial for its era. It houses the self-winding Caliber 2121, a thin movement derived from Jaeger-LeCoultre's Caliber 920, known for its full-rotor design. The movement provides a power reserve of approximately 40 hours. The crystal protecting the dial is acrylic, and the watch offers a water resistance of 50 meters, suitable for general wear.
For collectors, the reference 5402 holds significance as the foundational model of a major watch series. Its various production series (A, B, C, D) present nuances in dial text and case back engravings that are closely examined. The integrated steel bracelet is an integral part of its design, contributing to its distinct profile. The blue dial, often with a "tapisserie" pattern, is a hallmark of this early reference, though other dial variations exist.
