small-luxury-world's comprehensive overview of the Patek Philippe Nautilus collection challenges the notion of its 'sporting elegance,' exploring how the line has evolved to encompass a broader range of styles and complications. This post, originally from 2015, remains highly relevant as it dissects the Nautilus's identity across various references, prompting a discussion on its versatility and future direction.

The original one (Ref. 3700) was a two hands and date only watch, but today there are several complicated pieces and even diamonds are available. The first one was puristic yet sophisticated. The current models are kind of different, at least in my book.

If we just look at the watches for men (more or less and depending on taste) it seems to me that there is more covered than "sporting elegance" only.

Is there a watch for almost any style/occasion, today?

Most of the time we talk about the Ref. 5711/1A-010 ...

... and from time to time we see the Ref. 5711/1A-011

Ref. 5712R and G are kind of rare here and I didnยดt even speak about the "GR" version.

Ref. 5713/1G-010 is rare as well.

Ref. 5719/1G-001 is a version of the Nautilus which I would not call "sporty" anymore.

Ref. 5724R-001 and G-001, are they still sporty in your book?

Ref. 5726/1A-010

Ref. 5726A-010

Ref. 5980/1A "first version"

Ref. 5980/1A "grey dial, second version"

Ref. 5980/1R-001

Ref. 5980R-001

Ref. 5980/1A "white dial"

Ref. 5980/1AR-001

An the latest one, Ref. 5990/1A-001

I know, there are still some missing - even without dedicated ladies versions.

Next year we probably can expect something special/NEW, but is there something you would like to see in Basel 2015?

Oliver

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 5726

The Patek Philippe Reference 5726 represents a significant milestone in the manufacture s annual calendar collection, combining the practical sophistication of an annual calendar with a sleek nautical aesthetic. Introduced as part of Patek Philippe s modern sports-elegant lineup, this reference demonstrates the brand s mastery in creating complicated timepieces that maintain everyday wearability. The 5726 builds upon Patek Philippe s rich heritage of calendar complications, offering collectors a contemporary interpretation of haute horlogerie that bridges the gap between dressy complications and contemporary sports watches.

At the heart of the Reference 5726 beats the exceptional Caliber 324 S QA LU 24H/303, an automatic movement that showcases Patek Philippe s technical prowess in calendar mechanisms. This sophisticated caliber features an annual calendar complication that automatically adjusts for months with 30 and 31 days, requiring manual correction only once per year at the end of February. The movement incorporates a 24-hour indication alongside the traditional calendar functions, displaying day, date, month, and moon phases through elegantly arranged subsidiary dials. The self-winding mechanism ensures consistent power delivery while maintaining the thin profile necessary for the watch s refined proportions.

The 40.5mm stainless steel case presents a contemporary interpretation of classic Patek Philippe design language, featuring clean lines and perfectly executed finishing that exemplifies the manufacture s attention to detail. The striking blue sunburst dial creates remarkable depth and luminosity, with its rich color serving as the foundation for the symmetrically arranged calendar displays. Protected by a sapphire crystal and featuring a fixed smooth bezel, the 5726 balances functionality with aesthetic refinement. For collectors, this reference represents an accessible entry point into Patek Philippe s complicated watch segment while offering the prestige and technical excellence associated with one of horology s most revered manufacturers. The combination of stainless steel construction, practical complications, and distinctive design elements positions the 5726 as a highly desirable piece for both seasoned collectors and those building their first serious watch collection.

with an existing movement or a completely new "bigger & more sporty" one?

I agree with you when you say "even more" as it is a "yes" answer to me. The Nautilus mixes elegance in a very special way. It is, to me, an elegant watch before being a sport watch. To be worn with any outfit, even suites. It brings something that other classical Pateks don't (modernity?). A more classical cased Patek is nice too but it lacks something in combination with our modern era, maybe it looks too shy and old (even if I can like quite much 5970 or 5070 refs in the mean time). One important feature of Nautilus is its slimness. A perpetual calendar Nautilus with 240Q would be cool. But so would a basic 40 years anniversary Nautilus with 260 movement, without second hand and solid back. In both cases slim bracelet and water resistance to 120 meters. Best, Kari

but at the moment I see it just a strong contender to 15202. Best, Kari
