Chromatic Fugue's acquisition of a Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 5711 offers a timely reflection on the allure of highly coveted timepieces, even amidst market hype. His personal account provides valuable insights into the watch's wearability, its comparison to other iconic sports watches, and a fascinating detail about its unique provenance. This article explores why the 5711 continues to captivate collectors, drawing on Chromatic Fugue's initial impressions and the community's shared experiences.

Oscar Wilde said that; he must have been a watch collector. Let me introduce my latest scratched itch, a 2015-vintage 5711:

First impressions:

1. I love it, despite the hype.

2. I had never even tried one of these on before; I'd just seen them in photos (and once in the wild). It's thinner than I expected and also more wearable for someone like me with thin wrists.

3. In look and feel, the watch/bracelet obviously bears a strong resemblance to the 15202 -- which, yes, came first, and is equally alluring. But unlike the 15202, with those flared lugs, the 5711 actually fits my wrist. I suspect the modern movement is more reliable too.

4. I love the provenance of this particular watch. The papers reveal that it was originally purchased in 2015 by a Swiss guy with an unusual name. I googled the name and discovered that he is a watchmaker who works at ... Patek. Apparently in 2015 the 5711 was still occasionally allocated to Patek employees, and this watchmaker was given the equivalent of a very attractive stock option. His gain is my gain.

Anyway, I'm very happy!

About the Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 5711

The Patek Philippe reference 5711/1A-011, part of the Complications collection, is distinguished by its white dial, offering a different aesthetic compared to other dial variations within the 5711 series. This particular configuration provides a clean and legible presentation, appealing to collectors who prefer a more understated yet refined look. It represents a specific iteration of a well-known Patek Philippe model, recognized for its integrated design.

The watch features a 40mm stainless steel case, housing the self-winding Caliber 26-330 SC movement. This movement provides a power reserve of 45 hours. The case is fitted with a sapphire crystal, contributing to its water resistance of 120 meters. The fixed bezel and integrated bracelet are characteristic elements of its construction.

This reference appeals to collectors interested in the evolution of Patek Philippe's offerings, particularly those seeking specific dial colors within established model lines. Its production run from 2019 to 2021 marks it as a relatively recent, yet now discontinued, variant. The watch's specifications align with Patek Philippe's standards for mechanical timepieces.

I still regret not getting a 5712 when it was priced sanely (not as an investment, but just to wear and enjoy).

For me, the 5711 fit like a glove. That was a large part of my love for the watch. Both it and 5712 are surprisingly thin and svelte (and to me make the most sense of the Nautilus line up as after those two the elegance gets lost a little as thickness is added). It’s never easy when one has to make the decision to β€œpay up” to get the watch they want. Sounds like the watch on the wrist for you has justified that decision. Enjoy this iconic design.

we face many itches in our short lives; only some of them should be scratched. This one was within the bounds of matrimonial harmony (just barely).

I feel similar here, have really been wanting a 5711 blue. May just pull the trigger just like you. Considered the 3700 as well but a good version is $150+. I also have the 15202st so this could be a good pair.
