The Patek Philippe Reference 2540 is a notable example of the brand's mid-20th century production, characterized by its distinctive square case shape. This reference stands out within Patek Philippe's catalog for its departure from more common round or rectangular designs, showcasing a period of diverse case experimentation. It represents a specific aesthetic choice that offers a different visual presence compared to its contemporaries.
This reference typically features a case crafted from yellow gold, with dimensions that provide a balanced and wearable profile for its era. The watch is powered by a manual-winding mechanical movement, consistent with Patek Philippe's horological practices of the time. The crystal protecting the dial is generally acrylic, a common material for watches produced during this period.
For collectors, the Reference 2540 appeals to those interested in Patek Philippe's less common case designs and the stylistic variations of the 1950s. Its square form factor, often complemented by unique lug designs, offers a distinct character. The reference contributes to a broader understanding of Patek Philippe's design evolution and its capacity for producing varied forms.
Is possibly my favorite - what a watch! Thanks for compiling all of these 👌🏻👍🏻
however, might we see a revival of such offerings again as part of the new Cubitus line??🤔 Now, that would be an impressive move with a nod to this impressive past. As an aside, it’s interesting to me how a Cubitus offering can seem so uninspired in contrast to if they had first introduced something like this first…I would bet on a more unified response. Regardless, they will always win because they have the name advantage which has a huge psychological impact. Great post, as always.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I intentionally didn't mention the Cubitus because it's just the recent tip of a deep iceberg! Best, Emmanuel
