Miles_151's post delves into the personal connection collectors often form with watches that defy popular opinion or market trends. His appreciation for the Patek Philippe Ref. 5960P, often considered an 'underdog' in the Patek Philippe lineup, highlights a core tenet of collecting: pursuing pieces that resonate personally, rather than solely for their market popularity. This discussion explores the nuanced relationship between a watch's perceived value, its design, and its place in a collector's heart.

Is the reason why I love this model so much.
Apart from what my eyes tell me and what it does I’ve always liked an underdog and have often befriended the unpopular kid and included him where I could. The soft side of my personality is why I love the 5960p so much.
And could also be why conversely other models have no place in my collection.
Been looking for a grey strap for a while now and finally found the perfect shade to match the colour of the dial.
Thanks to a collected man for great service and strap.

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 5960

The Patek Philippe Complications reference 5960A, introduced in stainless steel, represents a significant offering within the brand's annual calendar chronograph series. This particular reference is notable for being the first annual calendar chronograph from Patek Philippe to be offered in a non-precious metal, making it a distinctive piece in the Complications collection. It combines practical complications with a robust case material, appealing to collectors seeking a blend of utility and horological complexity.

This reference features a 40.5mm stainless steel case, housing the self-winding Caliber CH 28-520 QA 24H. The movement provides a power reserve of approximately 55 hours and is visible through a sapphire crystal case back. The dial is presented in white, protected by a sapphire crystal, and the watch is water-resistant to 30 meters. The integrated stainless steel bracelet complements the case material, providing a cohesive aesthetic.

The 5960A in stainless steel holds a specific position for collectors due to its material choice and the integrated bracelet, differentiating it from its precious metal counterparts. Its combination of an annual calendar and chronograph functions, along with the 24-hour indication, makes it a highly functional and mechanically interesting timepiece. The special hand set and case back decoration mentioned for this specific 5960A further emphasize its unique attributes within the production run.

I agree. So much to love and seemingly dislike. The more unpopular the 5960p becomes the more I will love it and wear it. M.

In any case, I still think this is one example of „the market“ not working.

Pleased you like the strap. It makes the dial look more like the shade it was intended to IMO. The darker straps make it feel more dull. M.

At it’s release it was definitely the popular kid, selling about $30k over retail! Then the pendulum swung hard the opposite direction. In any case, who cares about popularity? I’m glad you see the beauty where some are not and I commend you on an excellent strap choice and find. Can you tell me who made the strap? Thanks!
