Unekual's acquisition of a Patek Philippe Ref. 3970P Second Series offers a rare glimpse into one of Patek Philippe's most coveted perpetual calendar chronographs. This article delves into the nuances of this exceptional reference, exploring its scarcity and the distinctive features that captivate collectors. Unekual's journey into the 'PCC Club' highlights the dedication required to secure such a significant timepiece.

I'm over the moon to be showing you guys my latest acquisition, earning me a spot in the PCC Club ! The watch is a Second Series 3970 in Platinum, which from my research very very few were made (I believe roughly 10 pieces, possibly a pinch more).

Cheers !

About the Patek Philippe Grand Complications Ref. 3970

The Patek Philippe reference 3970 is a perpetual calendar chronograph, a complication central to the brand's heritage. It succeeded the highly regarded reference 2499 and served as a bridge to the later reference 5970. The 3970 was produced over an extended period, allowing for several series and subtle variations in its design, making it a significant model for collectors interested in the evolution of Patek Philippe's complicated wristwatches.

This reference features a 36mm case, commonly found in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, and platinum. It is powered by the manual-wind caliber CH 27-70 Q, based on a Lemania Γ©bauche, which offers a power reserve of 60 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal, protecting a dial that typically includes subdials for the chronograph, perpetual calendar displays, and moon phases.

The 3970 appeals to collectors seeking a classic Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronograph with a traditional aesthetic and a historically important movement. Its long production run from 1986 to 2004 means that examples from different series, such as the first, second, and third, exhibit minor differences in dial layout and case details, providing distinct collecting opportunities within the reference.

And your specimen is even more special. The leaf hands are a delight. Well done catching this rare bird: was your search a long affair?

Are the day and month indications in Spanish? That's interesting.

The only reason I don't own this release is my almost 8" wrist. Design-wise, this is a pure Patek, the Patek to own and enjoy. Way to go! Good for you!

I love the 3970. About 3 years ago, I finally tracked one down in yellow gold that had not been over- polished. I wear it frequently and appreciate the fact that they are manually wound watches. The 3970 is an excellent reference and a gift from Heaven to people like me who cannot afford a 2499! Enjoy your beautiful watch!
