1WatchMan's candid wrist-test review of the Patek Philippe Cubitus offers a crucial early perspective on this polarizing new reference. His insights into its design, perceived market positioning, and the 'square Nautilus' debate provide a valuable foundation for collectors considering Patek Philippe's latest direction. This article synthesizes community reactions to help readers understand the nuances of this significant release.

The main reason being availability, as I think these novelties will only go to VVIP clients, at least for a while. But also because I don't love the square shape and proportions. The wrist test has just confirmed my initial thoughts.

I do love the new day-big date complication though, and I hope to see it in other models in the future.

I know that this is advertised as a whole new line, but honestly to me it looks just as a square Nautilus. I'm sorry, but I have a hard time trying to understand why Patek states that it is not.

Actually, I would understand it as a square variant within the Nautilus line, or as a gradual replacement of current Nautilus shape (if Patek considered that we had enough of the original one and the evolution should be square).

Please, don't get me wrong, I'm not hating the Cubitus, I actually like it. It is simply that I usually don't love square watches and this one is not an exception.

I just wanted to share my thoughts after my unexpected wrist test today, thanks for reading.

About the Patek Philippe Cubitus Ref. 5821

The Patek Philippe reference 5821, known as the Cubitus, represents a distinctive design within the brand's offerings, characterized by its unique case architecture. This model deviates from more traditional round or rectangular forms, presenting a profile that emphasizes sculptural qualities and a departure from conventional watchmaking aesthetics. It is a piece that appeals to collectors seeking Patek Philippe's less common and more architecturally focused creations, showcasing a different facet of the manufacture's design capabilities.

The case of the 5821 Cubitus is crafted from 18k white gold, featuring a substantial yet refined presence on the wrist. While specific dimensions contribute to its unique wearability, the overall construction is designed to highlight its distinctive shape. The watch is powered by a manual-winding mechanical movement, reflecting a commitment to traditional horological principles. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, ensuring clarity and durability.

This reference holds particular interest for collectors who appreciate Patek Philippe's ventures into unconventional case designs. It stands apart from the brand's more widely recognized collections, offering a piece that combines high-end watchmaking with a strong artistic statement. The Cubitus series, including the 5821, illustrates the breadth of Patek Philippe's design philosophy beyond its classic complications and sports models, appealing to those who value rarity and distinctive form.

I find the case design easier on the eyes when the leftmost part of the case is hidden under your cuff, looks bloated otherwise.

But I can appreciate your overall point. But why do you say it will only go to VVIPs…did the AD say something about needing previous purchase history as opposed to new clients? If this is indeed the new “Nautilus” sports line, then I will expect it to be dangled as an aspirational piece after XYZ previous pieces. But that applies even to the platinum version? I guess it’s a rhetorical question since I don’t expect an SA to speak so openly to this issue.

No doubt they will sell but that fact alone doesn’t mean it’s a good looking watch. A swing and a miss if you ask me.

I’ve already shared my other thoughts. So thanks a lot, but it’s not for me. ☺️🙏

During my visit to the AD, I asked about the possibility to attract new younger clients (not me, not young enough 😅) with this model, but I guessed based on the answer I got that it wouldn't be the case, and it will initially go to well-known clients. I guess it's difficult to disappoint VVIP clients in favor of first time buyers...
