Patekova's post delves into the unexpected appeal of the Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 5990/1A, a reference often considered 'under the radar' compared to its siblings. This detailed review explores its unique combination of complications, wearability, and overall value proposition, inviting fellow collectors to share their perspectives.

my AD mentioned that he had just received one and wondered if I might be interested. I hurriedly did some research on the watch and was intrigued by its combination of complexity and practicality. Having a travel time/dual time zone function was special to begin with - but additionally having day/night indicators for both Local and Home times added to the appeal. Further the Local time hand can be moved forwards or backwards which will also move the date backwards or forwards at the same time. Then there's the chronograph which like 5980 is a fly back and can also be run continuously as a second hand without harming the movement. The dial is perfectly balanced and symmetrical and IMHO beautiful! Plus, self winding and beautiful movement. Seems like a perfectly cohesive combination of 5164A and 5980 1/A in a Nautilus case.So I was hooked.

The big (in more than one way) question for me was how would it feel on my wrist. For Patek it is relatively chunky, much more so than 5711/5712. I could only answer that question by wearing the watch. I am happy to report that despite my small wrist it is quite comfortable. Feels more comfortable than a Submariner - that was a very pleasant surprise.

Also, because of its relative heft I find it leans more towards "sports watch" than 5711/5712 which for me are more "sporty" than "sports watch"

Bottom line - I am thrilled to own it.

I wonder how other Forum members feel about 5990, whether they are owners of 5990 or not.

Best, Patekova

About the Patek Philippe Nautilus Chronograph Ref. 5980

The Patek Philippe Nautilus reference 5980 was introduced in 2006, marking a significant evolution for the Nautilus line by integrating a chronograph complication. This reference was notable for being the first Nautilus chronograph, presenting a sportier and more technically complex option within the collection. It maintained the distinctive porthole-inspired case design while adding a monopusher flyback chronograph function, consolidating the chronograph registers into a single sub-dial at 6 o'clock.

This reference features a 40.5 mm stainless steel case, characteristic of the Nautilus's robust yet refined aesthetic. It is powered by the self-winding caliber CH 28-520 C, an integrated flyback chronograph movement that operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of 45-55 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal and is water-resistant to 120 meters, underscoring its design as a luxury sports watch.

The 5980 appeals to collectors seeking a Nautilus with additional functionality beyond time and date. Its introduction expanded the model's appeal, offering a more intricate mechanical experience while retaining the core design elements. The blue-black gradient dial is a signature feature, contributing to its distinct visual identity. This reference was produced until 2014, making it a specific period piece within the broader Nautilus chronology.

Love my 5990. I always travel with it. Very smooth though a bit on the thick side. It would be an icing on the cake if it is titanium with an alarm function.

โ€œheavyโ€ (pun intended )weight in todayโ€™s Nautilus craze ! Enjoy it often ! Cheers, Gordon p.s. When I saw the post, I thought it would have been a Patek sold via Tiffany and it has a Tiffany logo in it. LOL !!

if PP can put the 5520 caliber AL 30-660 S C FUS inside a nautilus. Keeping the 11.6 mm height.
