Hashluck recounts the 'accidental' acquisition of a Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 5711/1A-010, a highly sought-after steel sports watch. This post delves into the immediate appreciation for its craftsmanship and timeless design, while also touching upon the collector's dilemma of unsealing a new acquisition and the practicalities of ownership.

I seem to have become the 'accidental' owner of a PP Nautilus 5711/1A -010 smile

I was at my AD purchasing another piece and this was put under my nose. I had never considered an Nautilus before, really had not but now I have one I love it of course. I admit to never really paying attention in the flesh and admiring the work and polishing that goes into it. Quite special and sort or retro chic but timeless at the same time. I see a lot of wrist time for this watch (though I am a little disappointed to read it scratches quite easily).

I am proud and pleased to add the Nautilus to my collection (in the classic blue/steel combo).

I will not be unsealing it yet (maybe wait for the 40th anniversary smile as I have this to play with for now:

There are many people around who would love to face such an accident. This basic Nautilus is a very nice multi-purpose watch. I wear mine with jeans and sometimes with suit. I can't say how I would place 5711 compared with my 3712 and 5980 - anyhow, this watch is one of those "nice to have, good for everything" watches. Best, Kari

But, if it happened in a good way, why not? Congratulations.

You'll be delighted and, concerning the scratch magnet effect, I've been wearing mine for a little more than 3 years now (half time) and yes it gets some hairlines and dings but I don't think more than other white metal watches. Of course the polished versus brushed (usually used for steel) is more fragile but compared to my white gold De Bethune I would say they look and wear the same (because of the polished surfaces). Enjoy it and please post when you unseal it! Cheers, Mark
