Sham1's original post delves into the fascinating and sometimes perplexing world of luxury watch auctions, highlighting a stark contrast in perceived value between a Patek Philippe Nautilus cork box and a vintage Patek Philippe minute repeater pocket watch. His observations spark a broader discussion on what truly drives value in watch collecting, especially concerning accessories versus horological masterpieces. This article explores the community's insights into market trends and the subjective nature of collector priorities.

While confined to the home, like many of you, I have decided to browse the various online watch auctions currently in progress and was especially bemused to see the famous cork box offered with early Nautilus models currently at HKD 95,000 whereas a beautiful enamel dial Patek minute repeater from 1910 had only reached HKD75,000!  I know there is strong following for the Nautilus and less so for Patek pocket watches but dear friends, we are talking about a box outbidding a gold minute repeater!!

So I decided to look at the estimates and it confirmed that the world of watch collecting has gone absolutely bonkers - the minute repeater had an estimate of HKD48,000 to  HKD70,000 while the cork box had an estimate of HKD100,000 to HKD200,000!!  The fact that the minute repeater has exceeded its estimate is cause for comfort but with six days left on the auction, that cork box must be on route to breaking some sort of record.

Am I the only one here who would have placed a bid on the minute repeater rather than the cork box?!  smile

that we should always keep our boxes and papers in good order because hey, one day they could be worth more than the actual watch!

Quality and content are way behind the crazy demand for anything sports watch related Ours not to question why- good if you are not collecting nautilus or aquanaut But I believe this craziness will end in tears- I said the same about Paul Newman daytonas so take what I say with a large pinch of NaCl Julian
