quattro's exploration of Patek Philippe's 'manta ray' cases, specifically the vintage Ref. 2554 and its modern successor, the Ref. 5100, offers a unique perspective on design evolution. His detailed comparison highlights the subtle nuances that define these iconic timepieces, inviting collectors to appreciate the historical context and aesthetic choices behind Patek Philippe's distinctive case architecture. This article delves into why the original 'manta ray' continues to captivate enthusiasts.

The Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 5100 was introduced in 2000 as a limited edition to commemorate the new millennium. This reference stands out within the Calatrava line for its distinctive 'Manta Ray' shaped case, departing from the more traditional round Calatrava forms. It was produced in very limited quantities across different precious metals, making it a notable special edition for collectors of the brand.
The 5100 features a manual-wind caliber 28-20/220, a movement specifically developed for this model, known for its elongated form to fit the unique case shape. The case is characterized by its rectangular, slightly curved profile with integrated lugs, and it is fitted with a sapphire crystal. The specific variant mentioned, the 5100P-001, is crafted in platinum.
This reference appeals to collectors who appreciate Patek Philippe's limited-production commemorative pieces and those drawn to watches with distinctive case designs. Its unique aesthetic and the bespoke movement developed for it position the 5100 as a significant, albeit unconventional, entry in the brand's modern history, particularly for enthusiasts of shaped timepieces.
delicious 😋! Thanks for this interesting post !👍
If I had to decide between the 2554 or the 5100 it would be a very tough call. The simplicity of the 2554 dial and as you say the thinner profile and subtlety of the case is very appealing. My favorite of the 5100 is the white gold. Never tried one on though.
Jokes apart, the 2554 is really fantastic. Thanks for looking.
but the thickness of the case is a real problem for me: something of the fluidity (the swimming manta ray) is completely lost. I will try to see both in real life someday. Truly fascinating models.
and I really think I would choose the 2554. Anyway, quite fascinating pieces. Thanks for looking.
The older model wins my heat too! Thanks for looking.
