...that I was fortunate enough to try on (a friend's). It would be even better for me if it was in steel. Lighter and more durable. But the layout is one of the best imho because it omits the date window which is not great on most Nautilus'.

The time honored symmetrical dial layout is indeed the best, which has been there since 3940. One hidden secret of 5740 is the correctors over the lugs, which are re-engineered to a non-radial position to adapt with the unique non-circular shape of nautilus watch case!
