Miranda, a respected voice in the Patek Philippe community, ignites a spirited debate by critically examining recent and current Patek Philippe references. Her provocative post, framed as a 'bonfire' of opinions, challenges the brand's contemporary design direction, particularly concerning chronographs and Calatrava models. Miranda's detailed visual comparisons and strong assertions invite collectors to reconsider what defines Patek Philippe's horological excellence.

Cubitus, yes that one. There’s been a few spark ⚡️ with that one. But, if hunting season is open, then let me get the double barrel shotgun out.
WARNING ‼️: if you’re easily triggered 😤 stop ✋ now. What follows will be bloody 🩸 and likely to cause severe offence.

Let me begin with what  I love ❤️ in the recent and present catalog. This will give a perspective on my taste, how I see the brand. My favourites in the current catalogue or just discontinued include the 5230/5231, 5196, 5711/5811/5726/5712, 5396,

There are sone beautiful grand complications that have managed to be both traditional and yet totally modern, whilst exhibiting extraordinary levels of horological complexity

Now I will begin.

They screwed up the simple chronograph, look at these amazing pieces

We have today this

So what’s wrong? The register are in the wrong position. How could you screw that up? It makes the whole dial unbalanced and its too big. There’s an obsession with upsizing within Patek
The situation is worse in the perpetual calendar chronograph, where there is so much space in the top half snd everything is compressed in the bottom half

There is no comparison to the classic 2499/5970/5004

Let me turn on the classic Calatrava

Sorry but this dial is a monstrosity, if I wanted a camera , I’d buy a bloody camera 📷

Then there is the 6007

They did a Panerai here, you don’t make a limited edition then pump out virtually the same model
Then oh my goodness gracious, 6119- no soul, the 5196 kills it. Oversized, unrefined. Just to please the sub dial 6 brigade, who think the Calatrava only ever existed as the ref 96. Virtually all automatic and many manual movements had the seconds sub dial above the six o’clock position

Then lets look at the perpetual calendar
Have a look at how unbalanced the whole watch is compared to the 3949/5140

All for the sake of making the watch more larger
The minute repeater isn’t any better

Compared to this

Compare this hideous annual calendar. It’s truly a watch that really doesn’t know what it’s actually trying to accomplish, neither dress neither sports, it does atleast meet the non binary standards

Im not going to spare the Nautilus either. The 5990 is ugly and ungainly it’s proportions are completely awol, the chrono pushers are so awkward placed

How to screw up potentially a  magnificent piece… take a great sized watch and screw it up by making it larger

So, the question 🙋🏽‍♂️ you should all be asking is if Ive lost my mind

By making this post I have given my genuine thoughts on many pieces, thoughts I kept to myself till now, but here is the point- all of these watches sell and sell well enough, the watches I stated at the beginning as the ones that I like, have probably not been as successful such as the ref 5230,5396 etc
Patek needs to evolve. It evolves for the current crop of collectors, not me. For them it’s on point,
We all have the right to express ourselves but doesn’t mean we are always right, just because I am a dinosaur 🦕 and wish for old school design it doesn’t mean its right for the company

Anyone wants this

Two crowns is lazy. It should be a single two position crown.

The modern designs do not have the harmony of the vintage and neovintage designs. We are not the target customer, full stop. Given the past 10 years, I do not have much confidence in the brand.
